Rapid formation of aerobic granular sludge by bioaugmentation technology: A review

Xushen Han et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the main strategies for accelerating the formation of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and focuses on the bioaugmentation technology. The bioaugmentation technology is divided into two categories: flocculating bacteria and filamentous fungus, which includes pure fungal pellets and pellet-bacteria system. The review also discusses the adsorption of various microorganisms by pure-culture fungal pellets in long-term operation. A comparison analysis of different bioaugmentation technologies for rapid AGS cultivation is provided, along with prospects for future research.

Efficient aerobic granular sludge production in simultaneous feeding and drawing sequencing batch reactors fed with low-strength municipal wastewater under high organic loading rate conditions

Masaki Miyake et al.

Summary: By operating a SFD-SBR under high organic loading rate (OLR) conditions with low-strength municipal wastewater, rapid and efficient aerobic granular sludge (AGS) production can be achieved. Maintaining a stable and efficient AGS production under high OLR conditions requires a long settling time during the feeding period.

A comparative study on simultaneous recovery of phosphorus and alginate-like exopolymers from bacterial and algal-bacterial aerobic granular sludges: Effects of organic loading rate

Xingyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of organic loading rate (OLR) on simultaneous phosphorus (P) and alginate-like exopolymers (ALE) recovery from bacterial aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and algal-bacterial AGS. The results showed that a moderate increase in OLR had a positive influence on the simultaneous recovery of P and ALE, resulting in good performance.

Impact of primary sedimentation on granulation and treatment performance of municipal wastewater by aerobic granular sludge process

Sadiye Kosar et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of settling prior to the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process on granulation and treatment performance. The results showed that granulation was achieved in both stages, with over 92% COD removal efficiency in each stage. However, settling prior to the AGS process led to a decrease in nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies.

Effect of feeding strategy and organic loading rate on the formation and stability of aerobic granular sludge

Oliver Terna Iorhemen et al.

Summary: The experiment results showed that using the slow anaerobic feeding strategy can form a stable aerobic granular sludge, while high OLR can form granules quickly but may lead to instabilities. Research recommends forming granules quickly with high OLR and then reducing the OLR to maintain stability.

Dynamic response of aerobic granular sludge to feast and famine conditions in plug flow reactors fed with real domestic wastewater

Yewei Sun et al.

Summary: Plug flow reactors (PFRs) were used to achieve continuous flow aerobic granulation in domestic wastewater. The morphology and characteristics of the aerobic granular sludge transformed as it passed through the reactor, with filamentous structures developing in the feast zone and disappearing in the famine zone. The lack of a famine zone can lead to loosened granule structure and deteriorated settleability.
