Deciphering the diversity and functions of plastisphere bacterial communities in plastic-mulching croplands of subtropical China

Gongwen Luo et al.

Summary: The study analyzed soil and film residue from fifty-five plastic-mulching croplands in subtropical areas of China, revealing significant differences in microbial community abundance and functions between the plastisphere and surrounding soil. The plastisphere was found to have enriched pathways related to human disease and an increase in genes associated with carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus cycles.

Effects of microplastics on soil carbon dioxide emissions and the microbial functional genes involved in organic carbon decomposition in agricultural soil

Yanxia Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that low doses of microplastics in soil have negligible effects on CO2 production, while high doses significantly accelerate CO2 emissions, exhibiting a dose-dependent effect. The presence of microplastics can stress microbes, requiring more substrates and energy for their metabolic processes.

Missing relationship between meso- and microplastics in adjacent soils and sediments

Li Xu et al.

Summary: Micro- and mesoplastics (MMPs) are recognized as globally dispersed environmental pollutants, but our understanding of their transfers between aquatic and terrestrial systems remains limited. The abundance and compositions of MMPs in soils and sediments differ, with lower transfer between the two compartments than expected. Future studies should systematically examine the missing associations between aquatic and terrestrial MMPs to enhance understanding of their environmental fate and impacts.

Effects of Biochar and Residual Plastic Film on Soil Properties and Root of Flue-Cured Tobacco

Chao Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that medium biochar can improve the impact of residual plastic film on soil, increasing soil saturation water content and root activity, thereby optimizing crop growth environment. This has important implications for the use of biochar as a soil ameliorant in residual film soil.

Response of common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) growth to soil contaminated with microplastics

Fanrong Meng et al.

Summary: This study found that both LDPE-MPs and Bio-MPs had effects on the growth of common bean plants, with >= 1.5% Bio-MPs exerting stronger effects. Further research on the ecological impacts of these MPs on soil-plant systems is urgently needed.

The microplastisphere: Biodegradable microplastics addition alters soil microbial community structure and function

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: Research shows that adding polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) can enhance the growth and activity of soil microbial communities, leading to higher enzymatic activity in the microplastic environment. Compared to untreated soil, soil treated with PHAs exhibits increased microbial diversity and altered bacterial community structure.
