Options for diversifying agricultural systems to reduce pesticide use: Can we learn from nature?

Summary: Increasing crop diversity can be an important and obvious first step towards more natural pest control, but it is not a silver bullet solution. Adopting a wider definition of integrated pest management (IPM) and including the environmental stewardship role of agriculture can enhance the use of natural mechanisms for pest control, but would also require an economic mechanism to reward stewardship that serves wider societal needs.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of fall armyworm on small-scale maize farmers in two villages in the Limpopo province, South Africa, and found that fall armyworm was identified as the most important maize pest in the 2016-2017 cropping season. Farmers experienced slightly lower maize yield losses compared to the previous season, and used pesticides as the main control measure for fall armyworm. This study contributes to understanding fall armyworm management by small-scale farmers and its importance for food security.

Potential roles of selected forage grasses in management of fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) through companion cropping
