Comparative life cycle assessment of conventional and organic hazelnuts production systems in Central Italy

Giuseppe Coppola et al.

Summary: Agricultural activity has negative effects on the environment, and organic agriculture is believed to be more sustainable than conventional agriculture, although this is debated. This study evaluated the environmental impact of organic and conventional hazelnut farming systems in Italy, and found that organic cultivation had higher environmental impact except for ecotoxicity related categories. Sensitivity analysis showed that yield is the main driver of environmental results.

Intercropping Practices in Mediterranean Mandarin Orchards from an Environmental and Economic Perspective

Bernardo Martin-Gorriz et al.

Summary: Crop diversification is important for soil and ecosystem health, and this study shows that intercropping herbaceous crops with mandarin trees can have positive environmental and economic impacts. The study found that the integration of intercrops did not have any detrimental effects on resource depletion, acidification, eutrophication, or global warming. Moreover, the correct choice of intercrops can reduce market risks for farmers.

Energy-economic-environmental cycle evaluation comparing two polyethylene and polycarbonate plastic greenhouses in cucumber production (from production to packaging and distribution)

Reza Hesampour et al.

Summary: This study measured the energy, economic and environmental aspects of greenhouse cucumber production systems using life cycle assessment (LCA) technique, cumulative exergy demand (CExD) analysis, and data envelopment analysis (DEA). The findings showed that improving the efficiency of the crop production process can reduce energy consumption, and chemical fertilizers and labor are the major contributors to total expenses. Direct and indirect emissions are identified as environmental hotspots.

Life cycle assessment of concentrated apple juice production in China: Mitigation options to reduce the environmental burden

Juanjuan Cheng et al.

Summary: Although there have been limited studies on the life cycle assessment (LCA) of concentrated apple juice (CAJ) in China, this paper represents one of the first studies to examine the environmental impacts of CAJ production using the LCA method. The study finds that the apple production phase is the main cause of environmental impacts, with the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and bio-pellets identified as the main hotspots. Scenario analysis suggests that reducing the use of fertilizers, pesticides, and bio-pellets can significantly reduce the environmental impacts of CAJ production.

Ratoon rice production in central China: Environmental sustainability and food production

Xue Shen et al.

Summary: Ratoon rice (RR) production has shown 25.3% higher yields compared to traditional single rice production, but it also leads to 23.5% to 35.1% higher pollutant emissions. The major contributors to pollutions were methane emissions produced from flooded fields, emissions related to fertilizer and pesticide application, and diesel fuel for machinery in RR production.

Estimating effects of cooperative membership on farmers' safe production behaviors: evidence from the rice sector in China

Houjian Li et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of farmers' participation in farmer cooperatives on safe production in agriculture in China. The results indicate that cooperative membership has significantly positive effects on safe production in rice agriculture, particularly in terms of green control technology, artificial weeding, and organic fertilizer input. Heterogeneous effect analyses suggest that farmers more likely to participate in cooperatives are more inclined to adopt green control technology, while those less likely to participate are more likely to adopt artificial weeding and increase organic fertilizer input.

The benefits and limitations of agricultural input cooperatives in Zambia

Jordan Blekking et al.

Summary: Agricultural cooperatives in Southern Africa are seen as a way for policymakers to provide direct benefits to smallholder farmers, such as subsidized agricultural inputs. Membership in cooperatives is associated with higher maize yields and increased use of hybrid-maize seed and fertilizers, indicating potential advantages for smallholders. However, there are concerns about inclusivity and whether the poorest rural households are being left out of cooperative membership, potentially widening the rural poverty gap.
