The First Characterization of Fog Microphysics in the United Arab Emirates, an Arid Region on the Arabian Peninsula

Michael Weston et al.

Summary: The study conducted the first measurements of fog microphysics in the arid region of the United Arab Emirates, revealing the meteorological conditions and microphysics characteristics of fog formation. The results showed a bimodal size distribution of cloud droplets, with droplet growth observed during the mature stage, suggesting both collision/coalescence and condensation processes were involved in droplet growth.

Climatology of the heat low and the intertropical discontinuity in the Arabian Peninsula

Ricardo Fonseca et al.

Summary: This study investigates the climatological state and seasonal variability of the Arabian heat low (AHL) and the intertropical discontinuity (ITD) over the Arabian Peninsula using ERA-5 reanalysis data from 1979 to 2019. The results show that AHL has strengthened in line with the increase in surface temperature, while ITD exhibits a noticeable northward shift in the summer months.

Increased Shamal winds and dust activity over the Arabian Peninsula during the COVID-19 lockdown period in 2020

Diana Francis et al.

Summary: Although anthropogenic pollutants have decreased during the lockdown, particulate matter (PM) concentrations did not show the same trend. In the eastern Arabian Peninsula, PM concentrations actually increased by 30% compared to the same period in previous years. This was due to the influence of desert dust storms and increased long-range transport of aerosols.

Climate Change and Weather Extremes in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East

G. Zittis et al.

Summary: Observation-based and modeling studies have identified the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region as a prominent climate change hotspot. The region's greenhouse gas emissions are rapidly increasing, leading to faster warming compared to other inhabited regions. Projected future trends include continued warming and an increase in extreme weather events. The region's vulnerability to climate change highlights the importance of adaptation and resilience strategies for sectors at risk.

The atmospheric controls of extreme convective events over the southern Arabian Peninsula during the spring season

Narendra Reddy Nelli et al.

Summary: Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCSs) over the southern Arabian Peninsula are more common during the spring months of March and April. This study investigated the processes behind such severe convective events using different data sources, and found that they are triggered by low-level wind convergence and moisture advection. The study also revealed the environmental conditions and mesoscale changes during MCS events.

Summertime dust storms over the Arabian Peninsula and impacts on radiation, circulation, cloud development and rain

Diana Francis et al.

Summary: This study investigated the atmospheric dynamics of intense dust storms over the Arabian Peninsula in summer 2018, revealing the formation of a cyclone over the Empty Quarter Desert as a key mechanism for these events. Using satellite data, the study observed the radiative forcing of dust storms and analyzed the impact of dust on the Earth's system. The study emphasized the importance of accurately accounting for the radiative forcing of dust in models for weather forecasting and regional climate projections.

WRF Gray-Zone Simulations of Precipitation Over the Middle-East and the UAE: Impacts of Physical Parameterizations and Resolution

Sourav Taraphdar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of different configurations of the WRF model over the UAE and Middle-East, finding that the 9 km resolution model shows good skill in capturing synoptic and meso-scale precipitation distributions. The aerosol-aware Thompson microphysics scheme outperforms the WRF double moment 6 class microphysics in annual mean precipitation over the Middle-East. Different Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) physics can lead to large differences in annual rainfall, with the Quasi-Normal Scale Elimination (QNSE) PBL scheme producing stronger precipitation and better agreement with observations.

Summary: The study shows that WRF performs well in predicting temperature and humidity parameters during the daytime in the UAE, with some nocturnal cold bias. There are varying degrees of biases for temperature (T-2m) and dew point (TD2m) in different regions, while wind speed (UV 10m) performance still needs improvement.
