Energy consumption and income of the poor in rural China: Inference for poverty measures

Feifei Chen et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between energy consumption and income of poor rural households in China and measures relative poverty based on household energy demand. The findings show that the energy demand of poor households increases with income after a certain threshold, and the relative poverty line for rural households in China is estimated at 5153.47 yuan per capita. The study suggests policies to promote energy transition and upgrade in rural China, as well as encourage rural households to switch from non-clean energy to clean energy.

How will natural gas market reforms affect carbon marginal abatement costs? Evidence from China

Hong-Dian Jiang et al.

Summary: The study highlights the distortions in China's natural gas market and the potential impact of deregulating prices on carbon abatement costs. Market monopoly liberalization or import restrictions have minimal effects on carbon abatement costs, but complete deregulation of market distortions could lead to a significant increase in China's carbon marginal abatement costs. The study also discusses policy implications for China's carbon trading policies based on different scenarios of natural gas market reform.

Identifying Key Factors in Determining Disparities in Energy Consumption in China: A Household Level Analysis

Ling Yang et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the energy consumption disparity at the household level in China using data from the Chinese General Social Survey. The findings show that household energy consumption behaviors have a complex impact on the overall level of energy consumption difference, and there is a significant urban-rural difference in energy consumption, with the contribution of different regions varying in explaining the overall difference in energy consumption.

Urban and rural differences with regional assessment of household energy consumption in China

Shubin Wang et al.

Summary: This paper explores the key factors driving changes in household energy consumption in China, using a decomposition framework to analyze the effects of energy intensity, regional structure, per capita consumption, population scale, and energy structure. Results show that energy intensity and regional structure reduced HEC, while population scale, per capita consumption, and energy structure stimulated HEC growth. Rural areas contributed significantly to the increase in HEC, with differences in impact between urban and rural regions.

Does Energy Poverty Reduce Rural Labor Wages? Evidence From China's Rural Household Survey

Wei-ping Wu et al.

Summary: Eliminating energy poverty is crucial to breaking the vicious cycle between inadequate and affordable energy services and low income in rural areas. Both extensive and intensive energy poverty have a significant negative effect on rural workers' wages, with greater impact on low skilled workers and those in the Western region. In addition to limiting access to education, energy poverty can also damage the health of rural workers, leading to inhibited productivity and wages.

Rural Electrification Pathways: An Implementation of LEAP and GIS Tools in Mali

Vittorio Sessa et al.

Summary: Remote rural populations often lack reliable electricity sources, making fossil fuels an unviable option. This study in Mali utilizes the Low Emission Analysis Platform and geographical information tools to reduce biomass consumption significantly through a combination of grid extension and decentralized solar PV. This approach not only improves environmental sustainability but also offers an economically feasible solution for increasing access to electricity in remote areas.
