The impact of capital market opening on stock market stability: based on D-MST method complex network perspective

Yanyang Yan et al.

Summary: This paper re-examines the impact of China's capital market opening on its stock market stability from the perspective of complex network. It proposes a new connected network model called Double Minimum Spanning Tree (D-MST) to analyze the topological structure and stability of the stock market before and after the implementation of the market opening policy. The results show that the opening of the capital market has a positive impact on the stability of the stock market, with the Shanghai Stock Exchange showing the greatest improvement in stability. However, under extreme market conditions, the opening of capital market can lead to greater systemic destructiveness.

CSR reporting in China's private and state-owned enterprises: A mixed methods comparative analysis

Irina Ervits

Summary: This paper employs a mixed methods approach to quantitatively and qualitatively analyze corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports of state-owned (SOE) and non-state-owned (non-SOE) companies in China. The quantitative analysis reveals overall homogeneity in CSR reporting among both types of companies, which can be attributed to national-level coercive isomorphism. The qualitative analysis identifies a recurring theme of strategic emerging industries (SEI) in the CSR reports of predominantly state-owned banks, providing empirical evidence of the connection between the social and economic objectives of the Chinese government, as well as the mediating role of state-owned banks in coercive isomorphism between the state and business (SOEs and non-SOEs).

Environmental Regulation and Corporate Cash Holdings: Evidence From China's New Environmental Protection Law

Chao Zhang et al.

Summary: Using the 2014 Environmental Protection Law in China as quasi-natural experiments, this study employs a difference-in-differences approach to examine the influence of environmental regulation on corporate cash holdings. The findings suggest that heavy-polluting firms increase their cash reserves by 15% more than non-heavy-polluting firms due to stringent environmental regulation. The analysis also identifies heightened environmental uncertainty, limited access to bank loans, and decreased government subsidies as the main reasons behind this phenomenon. Moreover, the impact of environmental regulation on cash holdings is more significant for firms without political backgrounds and in regions with less dependence on the secondary sector.

Does public participation promote environmental efficiency? Evidence from a quasi-natural experiment of environmental information disclosure in China

Hua Zhang et al.

Summary: Previous literature on improving environmental efficiency has focused on the role of the government and neglected the contribution of public participation represented by environmental non-governmental organizations (ENGOs). This paper evaluates the effectiveness of public participation using a quasi-natural experiment generated by the Institute of Public and Environmental Affairs (IPE) in China. The empirical results show that environmental efficiency in cities with environmental information disclosure improves by 21.11% compared to cities without such disclosure. However, this improvement diminishes in the long-term. The study also demonstrates that controlling pollutant emissions is the main mechanism for enhancing environmental efficiency. Moreover, the effects of public participation are more prominent in eastern, developed, large, and non-resource-based cities. These findings highlight the importance of public participation in green development and provide empirical evidence for a diversified environmental governance system.
