Tillage and crop management impacts on soil loss and crop yields in northwestern Ethiopia

Fekremariam Asargew Mihretie et al.

Summary: The lack of appropriate agronomic practices contributes to soil erosion and low yields in teff production in Ethiopia. This study investigated the effects of different tillage practices, planting methods, and compaction options on soil loss and teff yields. The results showed that reduced tillage and row planting significantly reduced soil loss and increased teff grain yield compared to conventional methods. The study concludes that the use of reduced tillage, row planting, and no trampling practices can effectively minimize soil loss without affecting crop yield.

Impact of levels of residue retention on soil properties under conservation agriculture in Vertisols of central India

Anita Kumawat et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of zero tillage-based residue management on soil health parameters in maize-chickpea rotation in black soils of central India. The results showed that zero tillage with residue significantly improved soil quality compared to conventional tillage, including reduced soil bulk density, increased volumetric moisture content, higher organic carbon and labile carbon content, increased nutrient content, and higher microbial density in the soil.

Puddled and zero-till unpuddled transplanted rice are each best suited to different environments - An example from two diverse locations in the Eastern Gangetic Plains of Bangladesh

Apurbo K. Chaki et al.

Summary: The study found that the performance of zero-till unpuddled transplanted rice (ZT UPTR) may vary in different soil types and environments in the Eastern Gangetic Plains of Bangladesh, requiring adjustments in nitrogen fertilizer management. In silt loam soil, ZT UPTR performed well, while in sandy loam soil, it performed slightly inferior to puddled transplanted rice (PTR).

Influence of tillage based crop establishment and residue management practices on soil quality indices and yield sustainability in rice-wheat cropping system of Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains

Kirti Saurabh et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different tillage practices and residue retention techniques on the sustainability of the rice-wheat cropping system in the Eastern Indo-Gangetic Plains. It was found that zero tillage crop establishment and residue retention contribute to improved soil health and agricultural system sustainability.

Preliminary Effects of Crop Residue Management on Soil Quality and Crop Production under Different Soil Management Regimes in Corn-Wheat Rotation Systems

Morad Mirzaei et al.

Summary: The study showed that applying crop residue can improve soil quality and yield, especially at higher rates of residue application. Different proportions of residue had varying effects on wheat yield and soil properties, with slight differences between the no-till and conventional systems.

Conservation agriculture enhances the rice-wheat system of the Eastern Gangetic Plains in some environments, but not in others

Apurbo K. Chaki et al.

Summary: The study compared three intensification options for the rice-wheat system in the Eastern Gangetic Plains, showing that incorporating mungbean into the conventional rotation increased system productivity, and adopting CA management practices further enhanced system benefits, although the effects were site-specific.

Rubing Zeng et al.

Summary: The study indicated that the content and stability of soil organic carbon are influenced by various factors such as soil type, geographical location, and climate conditions across different climatic gradients. The research also found that the insoluble humin residue (HMr) is the main component of SOC, with its content decreasing with climate change.

Establishment of Crops under Minimal Soil Disturbance and Crop Residue Retention in Rice-Based Cropping System: Yield Advantage, Soil Health Improvement, and Economic Benefit

Nazmus Salahin et al.

Summary: The field trial conducted in the Gangetic Plains of Bangladesh showed that strip-tillage and bed planting performed better in terms of rice and lentil yield, while strip-tillage and zero tillage were more effective for jute. Increasing residue retention led to higher crop yields across all years. Additionally, minimum soil disturbance practices such as zero tillage and strip-tillage significantly improved soil nutrient concentrations and crop yields compared to conventional tillage.
