Phosphorescence Induction by Host-Guest Complexation with Cyclodextrins - The Role of Regioisomerism and Affinity

Matthias Hayduk et al.

Summary: We conducted an in-depth investigation on cyclodextrin complexes with guest compounds exhibiting complexation-induced room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) in aqueous solution. Interestingly, only the regioisomers with lateral substituents on meta-position displayed RTP, while the stronger host-guest systems with para-substituted dyes did not show any RTP features. Isothermal titration calorimetry and mass spectrometry were used to study the complexation behavior of the reported systems in water. Strong 1:1 inclusion complexes (K_a up to 5.13x10^5 M^-1) were unexpectedly observed for gamma-CD. It was found that both strong binding to the cyclodextrin cavity and conformation inside the cavity played crucial roles in restricting motion and inducing emission.

Aggregation-Induced Emission-Active Gels: Fabrications, Functions, and Applications

Zhao Li et al.

Summary: Chromophores with aggregation-induced emission (AIEgens) display intense fluorescence in their aggregated states but minimal emission in solution as discrete molecules due to changes in intramolecular motions. Gels, as solvent-swollen quasi-solids, manipulate intramolecular motions and have attracted significant interest for their unique properties and promising applications. The comprehensive overview covers fabrication strategies, applications, functions, structure-property relationships of AIE-active gels, diverse areas of applications, ongoing challenges, potential means to address them, and future perspectives to inspire research on novel materials and ideas.

Bridged Aromatic Oxo- and Thioethers with Intense Emission in Solution and the Solid State

Steffen Riebe et al.

Summary: This study explores a class of emitters based on bridged oxo- and/or thioethers, which exhibit remarkable photoluminescence properties in fluid solution and the solid state. The research discovered compounds with nearly identical photoluminescence quantum yields in solution and in the solid state, a rare finding. Additionally, the study sheds light on the influence of polymorphism and solvent polarity on emission properties through quantum chemical calculations and X-ray diffractometric analysis.
