Perspective Design of Algae Photobioreactor for Greenhouses-A Comparative Study

Katerina Sukacova et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the energy efficiency of biomass and lipid production by Chlorella pyrenoidosa in different photobioreactors, finding that the multi-tubular photobioreactor had the lowest energy requirements but also lower productivity in warm summers. Future development may focus on hybrid microalgal cultivation systems to meet sustainable yearlong production requirements in the context of global change.

High Carotenoid Mutants of Chlorella vulgaris Show Enhanced Biomass Yield under High Irradiance

Zeno Guardini et al.

Summary: By applying chemical mutagenesis and selecting for norflurazon-resistant strains, enhanced carotenoid pool size and growth tolerance under photooxidative stress were observed in Chlorella vulgaris. Optimizing carotenoid/chlorophyll ratio and resistance to photooxidative stress improved light-to-biomass conversion efficiency under high light conditions of photobioreactors. Enhanced tolerance to singlet oxygen in Chlorella is promoted by at least two independent mechanisms, only one of which is carotenoid-dependent.
