Post-genomics revolution in the design of premium quality rice in a high-yielding background to meet consumer demands in the 21st century

Nese Sreenivasulu et al.

Summary: The eating and cooking quality (ECQ) of rice is crucial for its economic value and consumer acceptance. Advances in gene and genome editing techniques have improved rice ECQ, specifically in terms of starch composition. Marker-assisted breeding has identified rare alleles associated with superior ECQ properties. This post-genomics-driven information can enhance current breeding strategies to meet consumer preferences and growing population demands.

Southeast Asia must narrow down the yield gap to continue to be a major rice bowl

Shen Yuan et al.

Summary: Southeast Asia is a major rice-producing region, but there are significant yield gaps among countries. Cambodia, Myanmar, Philippines, and Thailand have relatively large exploitable yield gaps, while Indonesia and Vietnam have smaller gaps. To ensure a large rice surplus in the future, it is important to substantially narrow down the exploitable yield gap within the next 20 years.

Evaluation of Hardness and Retrogradation of Cooked Rice Based on Its Pasting Properties Using a Novel RVA Testing

Sumiko Nakamura et al.

Summary: In this study, different heating and cooling programs were used to compare the pasting properties of various rice samples using a high-temperature-type Rapid Visco Analyzer. A new program at 120 degrees Celsius showed higher positive correlations with retrograded surface and overall hardness, absorbance of cooked rice, and resistant starch compared to the conventional program at 93 degrees Celsius. Estimation formulae were developed for predicting retrograded surface hardness for various kinds of rice, providing an efficient method for assessing the cooking properties of different rice samples.
