A Critical Review on the Use of Ionic Liquids in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Adnan Alashkar et al.

Summary: This paper provides a comprehensive review on the incorporation of ionic liquids (ILs) into polymer blends and their utilization as proton exchange membranes (PEM). It discusses various conventional polymers that incorporate ILs and presents the methods of synthesis of IL/polymer composite membranes. The paper concludes that the presence of certain ILs can increase the conductivity of the PEM and enhance the performance of PEMFCs, but highlights the challenges of leakage and limited long-term thermal and mechanical stability.

Summary: ZrO2-TiO2 particles synthesized by a sol-gel method were impregnated in a Nafion membrane to prepare composite membranes (NZTs). The water uptake increased and the ion exchange capacity decreased as the TiO2 content increased in the NZTs. Among them, the composite membrane with a Zr:Ti ratio of 1:3 (NZT13) showed the best electrochemical characteristics.

Study on Control of Polymeric Architecture of Sulfonated Hydrocarbon-Based Polymers for High-Performance Polymer Electrolyte Membranes in Fuel Cell Applications

Mijeong Kim et al.

Summary: Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is an eco-friendly energy conversion device that can convert chemical energy into electrical energy without harmful emissions. Nafion(R), a representative PFSA ionomer-based membrane, has high proton conductivity but drawbacks such as high cost and emission of pollutants during degradation. Efforts are being made to develop hydrocarbon-based PEMs with improved proton conductivity for practical fuel cell applications.
