Polymeric composite membranes in carbon dioxide capture process: a review

Shankar Kunalan et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide emission is the main cause of environmental issues like global warming and climate change. Capturing CO2 from industrial sources is an important step to address these problems. Polymeric composite membranes have shown better performance in CO2 capture compared to other membranes due to their composite structure. This review discusses the utilization of different polymeric composite membranes and their potential to improve the CO2 capture process in industrial applications.

Oxygen enrichment of air: Performance guidelines for membranes based on techno-economic assessment

Marina Micari et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the use of high-performance membranes to provide more possibilities for oxygen enrichment processes, achieving energy and cost savings through optimization of selectivity and permeance, and exploring the optimal O-2/N-2 selectivity in different purity ranges. Membrane technology has significant potential value in important applications such as natural gas combustion, production of medical-grade oxygen, and oxycombustion.

High-Flux Thin Film Composite PIM-1 Membranes for Butanol Recovery: Experimental Study and Process Simulations

Jorge Contreras-Martinez et al.

Summary: Thin film composite (TFC) membranes based on the polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM-1) were successfully prepared on a porous electrospun polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibrous support for efficient separation of n-butanol/water mixtures. The membranes exhibited high permeate fluxes and acceptable separation factors. Hybrid PV-distillation systems were designed to reduce butanol recovery cost compared to conventional distillation processes.

Importance of small loops within PIM-1 topology on gas separation selectivity in thin film composite membranes

Andrew B. Foster et al.

Summary: Blends of different topological samples of PIM-1 polymer can dramatically vary the selectivity and aging behavior of thin film composite membranes for the CO2/N-2 gas pair. The optimal polymerization process can produce a topologically rich sample with multi-loop polymeric structure for improved gas separation performance in TFC membranes.
