An Optical Sensing Platform for Beta-Glucosidase Activity Using Protein-Inorganic Hybrid Nanoflowers

Ziping Liu et al.

Summary: This work presents a convenient and dual-signal readout optical sensing platform for the sensitive and selective determination of beta-glucosidase (beta-Glu) activity. Protein-inorganic hybrid nanoflowers with peroxidase-mimicking activity were synthesized through a self-assembled strategy. These nanoflowers could catalytically convert a colorless and non-fluorescent substance into a colored and highly fluorescent product via an electron transfer process. The activity of beta-Glu could suppress the catalytic activity of these nanoflowers, resulting in a decrease in fluorescence and color fading. The concentration of beta-Glu could be determined by measuring the fluorescence and color changes, establishing a sensing system for beta-Glu activity determination.
