Advanced maternal age and adverse pregnancy outcomes

Alexander P. Frick

Summary: Advanced maternal age is associated with a wide range of adverse pregnancy outcomes, including increased risks for miscarriage, chromosomal abnormalities, stillbirth, and preterm birth. However, varying definitions in both maternal age and reported outcomes can make it difficult to provide accurate counseling to individual women about their specific risks. It is important to clarify the magnitude of these risks in order to provide more informed clinical counseling and decision-making for pregnant women of advanced maternal age.

Trends in maternal characteristics, and maternal and neonatal outcomes of women with gestational diabetes: A study from Jordan

Reema A. Karasneh et al.

Summary: The study found that women with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are closely linked to several clinical factors, such as weight, BMI, and previous obstetric history. Women with GDM are more likely to experience pregnancy complications, and their offspring are also at higher risk of neonatal complications.

Impact of maternal age on performance of the progeny in Galleria mellonella (L., 1758) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae)

Yesim Koc et al.

Summary: Maternal age significantly impacts the development time and adult longevity of Galleria mellonella larvae. Offspring of younger mothers have longer lifespans but longer development times, while offspring of older mothers have shorter development times but increased overall longevity.

The impact of advanced maternal age on pregnancy and offspring health: A mechanistic role for placental angiogenic growth mediators

Ericka M. Biagioni et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, birth rates among women of advanced maternal age have increased; however, pregnancies with AMA are considered high-risk and associated with a significant increase in pregnancy complications. Offspring exposed to unfavorable intrauterine conditions are subject to long-term health consequences.

Maternal and neonatal outcomes in mothers with diabetes mellitus in qatari population

Mohammad A. A. Bayoumi et al.

Summary: The study found that both pre-pregnancy DM and gestational DM have an impact on the growth parameters of newborns, with higher risks of macrosomia among infants born to diabetic mothers. However, there were no significant differences in head circumference, length, and major congenital malformations. Efforts to prevent excessive birth weight should focus on modifiable factors such as pre-pregnancy BMI and maternal age.

First pregnancy risk factors and future gestational diabetes mellitus

Israel Yoles et al.

Summary: First pregnancy without GDM complicated by hypertensive disorders, perinatal mortality, maternal obesity, and fetal macrosomia was associated with an increased risk for GDM in the subsequent pregnancy. Women with these complications may benefit from early detection of GDM in their subsequent pregnancy.

High pre-pregnancy BMI with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus is associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in Korean women

Dayeon Shin et al.

Summary: This study revealed a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes in Korean women who were overweight or obese before pregnancy with a history of GDM compared to those without GDM history. Additionally, high pre-pregnancy BMI or high current BMI increased the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes in Korean women, regardless of GDM history. This highlights the importance of maintaining a healthy weight status both before and after pregnancy to prevent future risk of type 2 diabetes.

Adverse perinatal outcomes and its associated factors among adult and advanced maternal age pregnancy in Northwest Ethiopia

Temesgen Getaneh et al.

Summary: The study highlights that advanced maternal age poses a higher risk for adverse perinatal outcomes compared to adult aged women, with significantly higher rates of preterm birth, low birth weight infants, and low Apgar scores. Maternal illiteracy, short birth intervals, and pregnancy complications were also found to be factors significantly associated with adverse perinatal outcomes. Recommendations include equal access to education, family planning services, and improved perinatal care for early detection and management of complications.
