The migration law of magnesium ions during freezing and melting processes

Zhang Yan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the migration law of magnesium ions during freezing and melting processes. Results showed that the migration efficiency of Mg2+ into the water layer under ice increases with increasing ice thickness, freezing temperature, initial concentration, and initial pH. Mg2+ was released in large amounts at the initial stage of melting and uniformly in smaller amounts during the middle and later periods, with an exponential model established to predict Mg2+ concentration in ice melt water.

Application of progressive freeze concentration in the removal of Ca2+from wastewater

Liu Tongshuai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect and mechanism of progressive freeze concentration (PFC) on high calcium wastewater treatment. The results show that PFC has a good removal effect on Ca2+ in the wastewater, with a removal rate of over 90%. The removal rate is positively correlated with ice thickness, freezing temperature, and initial pH, and negatively correlated with initial concentration above 500 mg/L. Through redundancy analysis, the experimental conditions can explain 90.7% of the characteristic parameters of Ca2+ removal.

Development of a US national-scale, mixed-source, pesticide, rural well database for use in drinking water risk assessment: an atrazine case study

Daniel B. Perkins et al.

Summary: For pesticide registrations in the USA, risk assessments for groundwater sources are usually based on standard scenario modeling. However, monitoring data has not been incorporated into the assessments. This study collected national-scale rural well data and evaluated its use in risk assessments, as well as analyzed monitoring trends over time.

Influence of Cd on atrazine degradation and the formation of three primary metabolites in water under the combined pollution

Dongyu Xie et al.

Summary: The presence of Cd2+ significantly decreased the degradation rate of ATZ and increased its half-life, affecting the formation of specific metabolites. The coexistence of Cd2+ and ATZ may lead to greater herbicide persistence and increased risk of environmental contamination.

Dynamic simulation of nutrient distribution in lakes during ice cover growth and ablation

Fang Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the nutrient transport in seasonally ice-covered lakes and establishes real-time prediction models for nutrient and pollutant concentrations. Results show that the empirical degree-day model and the HIGHTSI model can accurately simulate lake ice thickness and predict changes in nutrient concentrations under ice cover, respectively.

Application of directional freezing for seawater desalination: Parametric analysis using experimental and computational methods

Khadije El Kadi et al.

Summary: Directional freezing is effective in removing impurities from ice crystals and increasing desalination efficiency. This study experimentally and numerically evaluated the desalination of surrogate seawater using directional freezing in radial and vertical directions. Results indicated that lower salinity brine, top freezing, and stirring flow contributed to improved partition and removal efficiency during the desalination process.

Parametric study of the progressive freeze concentration for desalination

Sina Moharramzadeh et al.

Summary: The progressive freeze concentration (PFC) process is used to treat waters by generating clean ice in a one-dimensional manner and concentrating salt and impurities into the liquid phase. By adjusting process parameters such as stirring rate, coolant temperature, and feed solution concentration, salt percent removal and ice percent recovery can be improved. This process is particularly useful for treating brine concentrate in inland desalination plants.

Metabolic process and spatial partition dynamics of Atrazine in an estuary-to-bay system, Jiaozhou bay

Wei Ouyang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial distributions of atrazine and its metabolites in water, suspended particulate sediment (SPS), and surface sediment in an estuary-to-bay system. The results showed that metabolites were more actively degraded in the coastal zone and dechlorination-hydroxylation metabolites were dominant pollutants in the bay. Environmental factors have a direct influence on the transport and redistribution of metabolites during the process.

Molecular understanding of ion rejection in the freezing of aqueous solutions

Shuang Luo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microscopic mechanism of ion rejection during the freezing of aqueous NaCl solutions through molecular dynamics simulations, finding that the rejection of ions by ice is determined by the competition between energy barrier at the ice-water interface and thermal effects. The ion rejection rate increases with temperature, and Na+ is rejected at a higher rate than Cl- due to differences in hydration energy. The role of temperature in freeze desalination applications of ion rejection is also discussed.
