Phytoremediation technology and food security impacts of heavy metal contaminated soils: A review of literature

Peter Olusakin Oladoye et al.

Summary: Heavy metal accumulation in soil and water is a major problem caused by inorganic contaminants, impacting food security and human health. Phytoremediation approaches, considered safe and environmentally friendly, have been extensively discussed in this review which also highlights research gaps and advocates for the use of 'omics' studies in selecting potential plants for remediation.

Factors influencing lead, mercury and other trace element exposure in birds from metal mining areas

Maciej Durkalec et al.

Summary: Non-ferrous metal mining is a significant source of toxic metal release to the environment, posing a threat to ecosystems and biota. This study analyzed bird feathers to assess the exposure of birds inhabiting non-ferrous metal mining sites to mercury, lead, and other trace elements. The results indicated contamination by mercury and lead in the feathers of birds in the mining areas, even after mining activities had ceased. Measures are needed to protect biota from overexposure to these toxic metals.

Factors determine the population characteristics of migratory shorebirds and their prey species in the coastal saltpans

Jeganathan Pandiyan et al.

Summary: This study collected quantitative data for the first time on the influence of season, salinity, water depth, and prey availability on the density, diversity, and species richness of migratory shorebirds in eastern coastal saltpans of Tamilnadu, India. The results showed that seasonal saltpans attracted higher shorebird density, diversity, and species richness compared to hypersaline saltpans, with the monsoon season playing a significant role in attracting more shorebirds. Multiple regression models revealed that year, season, salinity, and water depth significantly influence shorebird density, diversity, species richness, and prey species density.

An assessment of level of heavy metals pollution in the water, sediment and aquatic organisms: A perspective of tackling environmental threats for food security

Jeganathan Pandiyan et al.

Summary: Pollution is severely threatening wetland habitats with heavy metals such as Hg, Cr, Co being higher in sediment, Ni and Cd in benthic species, Cu and Pb in crabs, and Zn in fishes. The correlation analysis between metals from different sources showed complex relationships, with sediment serving as a major influence on metal accumulation in biotic species.
