Control Framework for Sloped Walking With a Powered Transfemoral Prosthesis

Namita Anil Kumar et al.

Summary: Customization of a lower-limb powered prosthesis controller is still a challenge. This study proposes a control framework using impedance control and trajectory tracking, with transition facilitated by Bezier curves. The derived impedance functions vary during the stance phase for the knee and ankle, and were simplified using principal component analysis. The resulting basis functions' weights exhibit monotonic trends with upslope and downslope walking, revealing a relationship between joint parameter functions and slope angle. The controller generated a healthy human gait similar to that found in healthy walking.

Adding a toe joint to a prosthesis: walking biomechanics, energetics, and preference of individuals with unilateral below-knee limb loss

Kirsty A. McDonald et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different toe joint configurations on gait kinematics, kinetics, rate of oxygen consumption, and user preference among prosthesis users. The results showed a significant decrease in Push-Off work when using the Flexible toe joint prosthesis, but little change in other gait parameters or oxygen consumption rate. Interestingly, participants who wore the prosthesis on their dominant limb preferred the Flexible toe joint, suggesting a potential link between user preference and limb dominance for future research.

Design of 3D printable prosthetic foot to implement nonlinear stiffness behavior of human toe joint based on finite element analysis

Hui-Jin Um et al.

Summary: In this study, a prosthetic foot with an improved toe part was designed by mimicking human foot characteristics and utilizing various shape factors. Finite element analysis and structural optimization were conducted to find a structure with characteristics similar to the human foot, resulting in good agreement with human foot behavior in the toe torque-angle curve. The designed prosthetic foot structure was validated to implement human foot function by comparing with human walking data.

Design of an Underactuated Powered Ankle and Toe Prosthesis

Lukas Gabert et al.

Summary: Powered ankle/foot prostheses aim to replicate the biomechanical function of missing limbs, but traditional designs neglect the role of toe joints. This new prosthetic device with an underactuated mechanism provides biomechanically accurate torque and enables energy recovery during gait.

Increased Symmetry of Lower-Limb Amputees Walking With Concurrent Bilateral Vibrotactile Feedback

Elena Martini et al.

Summary: Augmented sensory feedback in rehabilitation programs can effectively improve temporal gait symmetry in lower-limb amputees, leading to better overall gait quality. Using a wearable device delivering vibrations synchronized to gait events during ground-level training showed promising short-term results.
