Is afforestation a driver of change in italian rivers within the Anthropocene era?

Vittoria Scorpio et al.

Summary: By reconstructing the evolutionary trajectories and key controlling factors of eight rivers in Italy since the mid-19th century, this study reveals the close relationship between land use disturbances, such as afforestation and deforestation, and channel adjustments. The research highlights the importance of upland afforestation in controlling channel narrowing, especially in southern Italy where floodplain afforestation was not observed. The morphological evolution of rivers, influenced by human activities and climate changes, demonstrates a shift towards higher channel resistance to erosion and sediment deficit in recent years.

Soil organic carbon accumulation rates on Mediterranean abandoned agricultural lands

Stephen M. Bell et al.

Summary: Abandoned agricultural lands in peninsular Spain show an overall soil organic carbon (SOC) accumulation rate of +2.3% per year post-abandonment, with a higher accumulation rate seen in abandoned woody croplands compared to abandoned cereal croplands. The impact of abandonment on SOC dynamics is context-dependent, with the most significant gains observed in a specific climatic window. Although regional climate changes and crop type abandonment will affect future carbon sequestration, abandonment can still be a low-cost, long-term natural climate solution when incorporated with other sustainable land management strategies.

Natural revegetation and afforestation in abandoned cropland areas: Hydrological trends and changes in Mediterranean mountains

Makki Khorchani et al.

Summary: This study used the regional hydro-ecological simulation system to analyze the long-term changes and annual and seasonal trends in streamflow and transpiration following management of abandoned cropland areas. The research found significant differences in streamflow and transpiration under different management scenarios, while climate scenarios did not show significant differences. Afforestation could significantly decrease annual streamflow and increase annual transpiration, especially in the first 30 years after management, with trends stabilizing or decreasing in the fourth and fifth decades. These results are crucial for optimizing land management plans to ensure sustainable hydrological and ecological ecosystem services.

Unravelling the role of vegetation on the different trends between climatic and hydrologic drought in headwater catchments of Spain

D. Pena-Angulo et al.

Summary: This study examines the hydrological and climatic drought trends in headwater catchments of Spain, finding a more marked increase in the severity of hydrological droughts compared to climatic droughts, possibly due to increased vegetation coverage. The results highlight the importance of land transformation processes on water resources availability, particularly during periods of climatic droughts.

Spatial distribution of fallout and lithogenic radionuclides controlled by soil carbon and water erosion in an agroforestry South-Pyrenean catchment

Leticia Gaspar et al.

Summary: The mineral composition of soils and weathering processes are known to control the natural radioactivity of soils. Research shows strong significant differences between the mass activities of Cs-137, Pb-210(ex), Ra-226 and K-40 based on different parent materials. Water erosion plays a key role in the mobilisation of fallout radionuclides, while lithogenic radionuclides are sensitive to physical processes in areas of intense soil loss.

Increased Vegetation in Mountainous Headwaters Amplifies Water Stress During Dry Periods

S. M. Vicente-Serrano et al.

Summary: This study found that vegetation changes significantly impact blue water availability, particularly during drought years and dry seasons. As vegetation increases, plant water consumption rises, leading to a significant decrease in streamflow. With aridity expected to increase in southern Europe, interactions between climate and land management practices appear to be exacerbate future hydrological drought risk in the region.
