Spatial and temporal changes of outdoor thermal stress: influence of urban land cover types

Mohammad A. Rahman et al.

Summary: Green infrastructure is an effective strategy to mitigate urban heat island and alleviate the impact of climate change on cities. However, it can also exacerbate winter cold stress. This study found significant differences in air temperature and humidity between urban and suburban areas. Increasing green coverage can reduce extreme heat stress while having little impact on winter cold stress.

Assessing the Direct Resource Requirements of Urban Horticulture in the United Kingdom: A Citizen Science Approach

Miriam C. Dobson et al.

Summary: Interest in urban food production is on the rise, with recent research pointing to its potential to enhance food security and reduce environmental impact. This study examined the resource demands of urban horticultural production in allotment gardens across the UK, finding the average resource usage per kilogram of food produced. As interest grows, efforts should be made to minimize resource requirements and increase production efficiency.

Thermal and Humidity Effect of Urban Green Spaces with Different Shapes: A Case Study of Shanghai, China

Hongyu Du et al.

Summary: Research shows that the shape of urban green spaces (UGSs) has a significant impact on the Temperature Humidity Index (THI), with different shapes having different effects on reducing the surrounding THI. Punctiform UGS with a larger area and presence of water bodies result in a lower THI; linear UGS with a wider shape and same orientation as the prevailing wind contribute more to decreasing the THI; planar UGS with a higher landscape shape index is critical for achieving a lower THI.

Urban Forests as Main Regulator of the Evaporative Cooling Effect in Cities

Athanasios Paschalis et al.

Summary: The study using remote sensing data found that vegetation type and coverage in the city can have a significant impact on the urban heat island effect, especially daytime urban heat islands are closely related to vegetation characteristics and background climate humidity. Differences in vegetation between urban and rural areas are primarily caused by changes in vegetation types and a decrease in forested areas within the city.

Understanding the drivers of sustainable land expansion using a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model: A case study in Wuhan, China

Xun Liang et al.

Summary: Cellular Automata (CA) are widely used in modeling land use dynamics. This study introduced a patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) model that achieved higher accuracy compared to other CA models. The model can help policymakers manage future land use dynamics and create more sustainable land use patterns.
