The Emerging Arctic Shipping Corridors

Chao Min et al.

Summary: The decreasing sea ice in the Arctic has made trans-Arctic navigation possible. Daily sea ice concentration and thickness data from CMIP6 projections were used to evaluate the future potential of Arctic shipping. The study found that the navigable area will continue to increase in the coming decades, sailing time will be shortened, and the number of navigable days will significantly rise. It is projected that by the 2070s, specific types of ships will be able to navigate the Arctic shipping routes year-round.

Trans-Arctic shipping routes expanding faster than the model projections

Yunfeng Cao et al.

Summary: The rapid decline in Arctic sea ice coverage has made trans-Arctic routes commercially feasible. However, the historical changes in navigability of these routes remain unclear. This study shows that the trans-Arctic routes are becoming navigable faster than predicted by global circulation models. The improved navigability enables commercial ships to transport more goods during the Arctic shipping season compared to the traditional Suez Canal route.

Spatial and temporal variations of recent shipping along the Northern Sea Route

Xiaoyang Li et al.

Summary: The study found that shipping levels along Russia?s Northern Sea Route have significantly increased, primarily driven by dry cargo ships, oil tankers, and LNG carriers. Dry cargo shipping was relatively high during 2015-2017, attributed to the Yamal LNG project construction, while oil tankers and LNG carriers experienced rapid growth in recent years due to transportation activities from the Novy Port and Yamal LNG projects.

Accelerated decline of summer Arctic sea ice during 1850-2017 and the amplified Arctic warming during the recent decades

Qiongqiong Cai et al.

Summary: The analysis of 168 years of summer sea ice area variations in six Arctic regions from 1850 to 2017 shows a significant decrease in the sea ice area, especially accelerating after 1948. The main drivers of the accelerated decline are global warming and regional Arctic warming, particularly influenced by various climate oscillations during the last few decades.

Impact of 1, 2 and 4 °C of global warming on ship navigation in the Canadian Arctic

Lawrence R. Mudryk et al.

Summary: This study uses climate model simulations to investigate changing navigability in the Canadian Arctic for major trade routes and coastal community resupply under different levels of global warming, showing longer shipping seasons and increased shipping traffic due to sea ice loss. The projections indicate significant increases in ship-accessible season length, especially in the Beaufort region, with 100% navigation probability for part of the year above 2 degrees C of global warming on certain trade routes.

Perspectives on future sea ice and navigability in the Arctic

Jinlei Chen et al.

Summary: The retreat of sea ice in the Arctic under global warming is significant and projected to continue, impacting navigation. Sea ice extent, thickness, and volume are expected to decrease, making navigation easier in open waters. The time for PC6 ships to navigate will shift, with open water routes expected to be accessible between August and October.
