Analysis of reduced and oxidized nitrogen-containing organic compounds at a coastal site in summer and winter

Jenna C. Ditto et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-containing organic compounds, which may be emitted directly into the atmosphere or form via reactions with reactive nitrogen species, have significant impacts on climate and human health, with a prevalence in the northeastern US and other regions with similar anthropogenic, biogenic, and marine source signatures. The study conducted molecular-level speciation of functionalized organic compounds, identifying a range of compounds containing oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms resulting from both direct emissions and chemical transformations, with nitrogen-containing particles dominating the observed distribution of functionalized particle-phase species. Additionally, gas-phase measurements suggest that gas-phase reduced nitrogen compounds may serve as contributing precursors to the observed nitrogen-containing particles.

Aqueous secondary organic aerosol formation from the direct photosensitized oxidation of vanillin in the absence and presence of ammonium nitrate

Beatrix Rosette Go Mabato et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the direct photosensitized oxidation of vanillin (VL) under simulated sunlight can lead to the formation of aqueous secondary organic aerosols (aqSOA), and ammonium nitrate plays a catalytic role in this process. The reaction produces oligomers, functionalized monomers, and oxygenated ring-opening products. Nitrate promotes functionalization and nitration. The study also reveals the effects of oxygen, pH, and reactant concentration on the reaction.

Dark Iron-Catalyzed Reactions in Acidic and Viscous Aerosol Systems Efficiently Form Secondary Brown Carbon

Hind A. Al-Abadleh et al.

Summary: Iron-driven secondary brown carbon formation reactions from water-soluble organics in cloud droplets and aerosols create insoluble and soluble products of emerging atmospheric importance. This study demonstrates that under conditions of high ionic strength and acidic pH, insoluble black polycatechol particles and colored water-soluble oligomers can be formed. By controlling reaction conditions and adding specific components, the rate of brown carbon formation and product formation can be modulated.

Synthesis and characterization of Poly (ortho-aminophenol-co-para-toluidine) and its application as semiconductor thin film

M. Sh. Zoromba et al.

Summary: Hydrochloric acid doped poly (ortho-aminophenol-co-para-toluidine) as a conjugated semiconducting copolymer was synthesized in acidic medium via oxidative polymerization. The resulting thin film was characterized for its structural, morphological, and optical properties, showing promising applications in optoelectronic devices based on data from optical analysis and conductivity measurements. The optical dispersion of the thin film was described using the Wemple-Didomenico model, and density-functional theory calculations were conducted to further study its properties.

Open questions on transition metals driving secondary thermal processes in atmospheric aerosols COMMENT

Hind A. Al-Abadleh et al.

Summary: Transition metals are increasingly recognized as key drivers in the formation and aging of light-absorbing organic aerosols, known as brown carbon, impacting the energy flux in the atmosphere. The authors discuss overlooked condensed phase chemical processes and identify research needs to improve our understanding of atmospheric aerosols and reduce modeling uncertainties in the effects of aerosol particles on climate.

Hygroscopicity and the water-polymer interaction parameter of nano-sized biodegradable hydrophilic substances

Chun-Ning Mao et al.

Summary: Hygroscopicity is a crucial property for nanoparticle science, determining the ability of particles to swell or contract in the presence of water vapor. Water-polymer interaction parameter is an important consideration for high molecular weight compounds, and can be determined in the supersaturated regime. Water affinity plays a key role in nanoparticle hygroscopicity and the organic molar volume contribution decreases with increasing molecular weight.

Summary: The study developed an analyzer system utilizing programmed thermal evolution of carbonaceous and nitrogenous aerosols and chemiluminescence detection to achieve simultaneous quantification of IN and ON. This method breakthrough allows for quantifying an important pool of aerosol N, which was previously analytically inaccessible, and has the potential to be applied in other environmental samples for quantifying IN and ON.

Summary: This study investigated the hygroscopic properties and cloud condensation nucleation activities of organosulfates (OSs) under varying humidity conditions. It was found that only a few types of OSs deliquesce with increasing humidity, while others exhibit certain hygroscopic growth. The research provided insights into the interactions of OSs with water vapor, contributing valuable information for a better understanding of secondary organic aerosols.
