Process intensification for valuable metals leaching from spent NiMH batteries

Jenni Lie et al.

Summary: This study examined the use of subcritical water extraction (SWE) and microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) for leaching valuable and rare earth elements from spent NiMH batteries. Results showed that SWE with 0.5N HCl was most effective, while MAE was the most energy-efficient compared to conventional methods.

Criticality and Life-Cycle Assessment of Materials Used in Fuel-Cell and Hydrogen Technologies

Mitja Mori et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on obtaining data on materials commonly used in fuel-cell and hydrogen technologies and developing an innovative method for material assessment to identify critical materials influencing the environmental impact. Life-cycle inventories were collected for an in-depth material-criticality analysis, with findings showing that polymer-electrolyte-membrane water electrolysers have the highest environmental impacts. Lower impacts were seen in polymer-electrolyte-membrane fuel cells and solid-oxide fuel cells, with alkaline water electrolysers having the lowest impacts.

Current technologies for recovery of metals from industrial wastes: An overview

Santhana Krishnan et al.

Summary: The increasing demand for heavy metals due to rapid industrialization has led to the depletion of high-grade ore natural reserves, necessitating the exploration of alternative sources. Massive industrial waste generation poses environmental challenges and health hazards, highlighting the importance of effective waste management strategies. Industrial wastes containing hazardous elements must be properly handled to prevent adverse effects on human health and the environment.

Towards the Circular Economy of Rare Earth Elements: Lanthanum Leaching from Spent FCC Catalyst by Acids

Corradino Sposato et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a combined acid-leaching/oxalate precipitation process to recover lanthanum from spent FCC catalyst using nitric acid. By utilizing this method, a highly pure lanthanum solid can be recovered with a negligible amount of poisoning metals present, offering a reliable industrial perspective for recycling and purifying rare earth elements in a sustainable manner.
