Phylogenomic Analysis of a 55.1-kb 19-Gene Dataset Resolves a Monophyletic Fusarium that Includes the Fusarium solani Species Complex

David M. Geiser et al.

Summary: The debate over the classification of the Fusarium genus in recent years has focused on whether the FSSC should be included in Fusarium, but molecular phylogenetic research has shown strong support for the monophyly of Fusarium including the FSSC, which is considered the best taxonomic option available.

Phylogeny and mycotoxin profile of Fusarium species isolated from sugarcane in Southern Iran

Maryam Tavakol Noorabadi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and mycotoxin profile of Fusarium species on sugarcane in Southern Iran. Most strains belonged to Fusarium fujikuroi Species Complex (FFSC), with some potentially representing new phylogenetic species. Fusarium proliferatum strains were found to produce high amounts of fumonisins, as well as lesser amounts of beauvericin and enniatins. The findings provide new insights into the potential risks associated with Fusarium species on sugarcane in Iran.

Fungal pathogens associated with harvested table grapes in Lebanon, and characterization of the mycotoxigenic genera

Wassim Habib et al.

Summary: This study assessed fungal infections in Lebanese table grapes post-harvest, finding that sulfur dioxide generating pads can reduce fungal populations and rot, but have limited effectiveness against latent infections. Furthermore, some fungal strains have genetic potential to produce toxins, highlighting the need for effective measures to prevent postharvest losses caused by toxigenic fungi.

Occurrence and Characterization of Penicillium Species Isolated from Post-Harvest Apples in Lebanon

Wassim Habib et al.

Summary: Lebanon is a major apple producer in the Middle East, but apples stored in cold storage facilities often show signs of decay. The most common fungal disease found in decaying apples is blue mould, mostly caused by Penicillium expansum, which can produce patulin toxin.

Mycotoxin Production in Fusarium According to Contemporary Species Concepts

Gary P. Munkvold et al.

Summary: Fusarium is a significant genus of plant-pathogenic fungi and one of the most important mycotoxin-producing genera in the world. Understanding the mycotoxin potential of individual species is crucial for assessing toxicological risks, but efforts to summarize mycotoxin production have been complicated by various classification systems.

Mycotoxin Profile and Phylogeny of Pathogenic Alternaria Species Isolated from Symptomatic Tomato Plants in Lebanon

Wassim Habib et al.

Summary: Tomatoes in Lebanon are commonly infected by Alternaria species, causing significant production and economic losses as well as posing toxicological risks due to mycotoxin production. A polyphasic approach was used to characterize 49 Alternaria strains isolated from diseased tomato plants, revealing high diversity in mycotoxin production and pathogenicity on tomato fruits among different sub-clades.

Phylogeny and Mycotoxin Profile of Pathogenic Fusarium Species Isolated from Sudden Decline Syndrome and Leaf Wilt Symptoms on Date Palms (Phoenix dactylifera) in Tunisia

Amal Rabaaoui et al.

Summary: A comprehensive study was conducted on Fusarium species affecting date palms in southern Tunisia, identifying Fusarium proliferatum as the main species detected. All Fusarium species were found to be pathogenic, with Fusarium proliferatum strains mainly producing fumonisins and other mycotoxins. This study highlights both phytopathological and food safety issues related to Fusarium species on date palms.
