Tongue and Lip Comparisons between Healthy and Nondysphagic Poststroke Individuals

Kristine Galek et al.

Summary: This study compared oral pressures between healthy individuals and poststroke individuals with functional swallowing abilities, finding differences in tongue and lip pressures but not in endurance or saliva swallow pressures. Poststroke individuals without dysphagia complaints may still have subclinical dysphagia, impacting their nutrition and quality of life.

Effects of a tongue training program in Parkinson's disease: Analysis of electrical activity and strength of suprahyoid muscles

Exequiel Plaza et al.

Summary: This study assessed the electrical activity of the suprahyoid muscle and tongue pressure in individuals with Parkinson's disease undergoing a tongue strengthening program. The experimental group showed significant increases in suprahyoid muscle activity and tongue strength earlier than the control group. Tongue strength significantly improved in the experimental group, while detraining effect was observed in the control group. Some dimensions of the Swallowing Quality of Life Questionnaire also showed significant differences between the two groups.

Effect of tongue-to-palate resistance training on tongue strength in healthy adults

Chun-Hao Lin et al.

Summary: The study found that tongue-to-palate resistance training significantly improved both anterior and posterior tongue strength, with positive effects appearing as early as 2 weeks for the posterior region. It is recommended to incorporate this exercise protocol into daily life to prevent or delay presbyphagia.

Muscular Assessment in Patients With Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Protocol for a Case-Control Study

Paz Francisca Borrmann et al.

Summary: This study aims to compare the muscular features of patients recently diagnosed with severe OSAHS with healthy controls, in order to determine suitable candidates for myofunctional therapy. Through biometric measurements, questionnaires, and muscle tone assessments, the research hopes to fill the gap in current assessments in this area.

Efficacy of oral myofunctional therapy in middle-aged to elderly patients with obstructive sleep apnoea treated with continuous positive airway pressure

Mayumi Suzuki et al.

Summary: The study used oral myofunctional therapy (MFT) to treat middle-aged to elderly patients with moderate or severe obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA), finding a significant decrease in apnoea-hypopnea index (AHI) and increase in tongue pressure after 6 months of MFT. This suggests that MFT can be a useful intervention for OSA patients, with increased tongue pressure potentially contributing to the improvement in AHI.

Use of fractal analysis in dental images for osteoporosis detection: a systematic review and meta-analysis

R. Franciotti et al.

Summary: Fractal dimension calculated on oral radiographs is not an effective tool for distinguishing osteoporotic patients from healthy controls, and the overall methodological quality of the studies in this area is low. Further research is needed to establish a standardized procedure for FD calculation in dental radiographs.

Comparing the Tongue and Lip Strength and Endurance of Children with Down Syndrome with Their Typical Peers Using IOPI

Hamid Reza Farpour et al.

Summary: Muscular hypotonia in children with Down syndrome leads to lower tongue and lip strength, especially in specific age groups, as well as reduced lips strength and endurance. The study utilizing IOPI provided quantitative data on tongue and lip muscle strength and endurance, which can be valuable for future research.

Sensorimotor tongue evaluation and rehabilitation in patients with sleep-disordered breathing: a novel approach

Laura Rodriguez-Alcala et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate dysfunction in patients with SDB compared with healthy controls, and the effectiveness of Airway Gym(R) as a myofunctional therapy. Results showed improvements in sensorimotor tongue function in SDB patients after therapy with decreased Epworth Sleepiness Scale score and increased IOPI scores. Overall, Airway Gym(R)app had a positive impact on sensorimotor tongue function in patients with sleep-disordered breathing.

Suboptimal Tongue Pressure Is Associated with Risk of Malnutrition in Community-Dwelling Older Individuals

Ke-Vin Chang et al.

Summary: This study found a positive correlation between decreased tongue pressure and an increased risk of malnutrition in community-dwelling older individuals. Older people with suboptimal tongue pressure may need to undergo a thorough assessment of their nutritional status and swallowing function for early identification of subclinical malnutrition and dysphagia.
