Increased migratory activity and cartilage regeneration by superficial-zone chondrocytes in enzymatically treated cartilage explants

Yuichiro Shiromoto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated chondrocyte migratory activity after enzymatic treatment and found that PDGF-AB is the major chemotactic factor for cartilage. Cells migrating from the superficial zone have higher migratory activity and may contribute to cartilage regeneration.

The superficial zone of articular cartilage

Taku Saito

Summary: The superficial zone of articular cartilage produces PRG4, which contributes to smooth joint motion. PRG4, besides being an extracellular matrix protein, has novel signaling effects. Various molecules and signaling pathways regulate the expression of PRG4 and the superficial zone. Further research on PRG4-related pathways and cells may uncover the mechanisms underlying joint homeostasis.

SOX9 keeps growth plates and articular cartilage healthy by inhibiting chondrocyte dedifferentiation/osteoblastic redifferentiation

Abdul Haseeb et al.

Summary: SOX9 is essential for embryonic chondrogenesis, and its deficiency in postnatal stages leads to growth-plate closure and deterioration of articular cartilage. The absence of SOX9 prompts growth-plate chondrocytes to rapidly reach a terminal/dedifferentiated stage and undergo overt osteoblastogenesis. Further research reveals the role of SOX9 in controlling TGF beta and BMP signaling activities during chondrocyte lineage transition.
