Intravenous versus Epidural Routes of Patient-Controlled Analgesia in Abdominal Surgery: Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis

Dmitriy Viderman et al.

Summary: This study compares the use of intravenous and epidural routes for patient-controlled analgesia in abdominal surgery. The results show that there is no significant difference in pain control and side effects between the two methods. However, epidural analgesia is associated with a shorter length of hospital stay, while intravenous analgesia is associated with fewer episodes of hypotension.

Postoperative Analgesia after Open Liver Surgery: Systematic Review of Clinical Evidence

Paula Dudek et al.

Summary: The optimal postoperative pain management after open liver surgery appears to rely on a blended approach including systemic opioids, NSAIDs, and regional techniques for the highest efficacy in pain prevention, lower postoperative stress hormone secretion, and fewer side effects. Any concerns about increased risk of wound infection associated with regional techniques have been ruled out.
