Neuroinflammation: A Potential Risk for Dementia

Md Afroz Ahmad et al.

Summary: Dementia is a neurodegenerative disease whose pathophysiological mechanisms are not well understood. Inflammatory processes in the brain have been shown to contribute to the development of dementia. Microglial cells, which are part of the brain's immune defense system, play a crucial role in detecting and responding to harmful pathogens. They release proinflammatory chemicals to trigger neuroinflammatory responses and protect the cell's microenvironment. Prolonged inflammation caused by microglial cells has been implicated in the promotion of neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia.

Coriolus Versicolor Downregulates TLR4/NF-κB Signaling Cascade in Dinitrobenzenesulfonic Acid-Treated Mice: A Possible Mechanism for the Anti-Colitis Effect

Daniela Impellizzeri et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects of Coriolus versicolor (CV) in mice with experimental colitis. The results showed that CV significantly reduced colon damage and weight loss, and its effects were associated with the downregulation of Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and modulation of the nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-kB) pathway. CV also counteracted oxidative stress by increasing the expression of Nrf2 and HO-1. These findings suggest that CV may be a potential dietary supplement for colitis.

Assessment of 2-Pentadecyl-2-oxazoline Role on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Inflammation on Early Stage Development of Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Davide Di Paola et al.

Summary: This study found that the oxazoline of Palmitoylethanolamide (PEAOXA) has strong anti-inflammatory effects. It can reduce inflammation caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), decrease the expression of cytokines, inhibit mast cell activity, and reduce the production of apoptosis-related proteins.

Neuroprotective Metabolites of Hericium erinaceus Promote Neuro-Healthy Aging

Elisa Roda et al.

Summary: The study found that a two-month oral supplementation with standardized extracts of H. erinaceus partially restored locomotor decline in aged mice, improved cerebellar structure, reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, and increased neuroprotective molecules. This non-pharmacological approach using dietary supplementation of H. erinaceus extract shows promise as an adjuvant therapy in conjunction with conventional geriatric treatments.

Immunotherapies for Neurodegenerative Diseases

Ibrahim Mortada et al.

Summary: Current treatments for neurodegenerative diseases mainly focus on symptomatic relief without addressing the root cause of the disease. Immunotherapy has shown potential in managing disease progression by harnessing the immune system to fight misfolded proteins. Research is ongoing to evaluate the use of immunotherapy in targeting neuroinflammation-induced neurodegeneration.

Summary: The study investigated the development of neurodegenerative diseases following traumatic brain injury (TBI) and the potential of Coriolus versicolor and Hericium erinaceus in preventing PD-related pathology. The findings suggest that these nutritional fungi can prevent neuroinflammatory and oxidative processes typical of PD, thus playing a crucial role in preventing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.
