Innovative FO-SPR Label-free Strategy for Detecting Anti-RBD Antibodies in COVID-19 Patient Serum and Whole Blood

Jia-Huan Qu et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need for rapid and accurate diagnostic tools. In addition to this, serological tests have become important for understanding patients' immune status and past viral infections. This study presents a novel approach for measuring antibody levels and profiling their binding kinetics, which is not possible with traditional serological tests. The method was successfully used in COVID-19 patient serum and undiluted whole blood, without the need for sample preparation, and provided results in a significantly shorter time compared to other tests. The results also showed that there is no direct correlation between antibody levels and their binding kinetics in different COVID-19 patients, suggesting that antibodybinding kinetics may play a role in the severity of the disease.

Impact of Genetic Variability in ACE2 Expression on the Evolutionary Dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 Spike D614G Mutation

Szu-Wei Huang et al.

Summary: The D614G mutation in the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein has been shown to increase the virus's ability to bind to ACE2 receptors, leading to higher transmission efficiency. This mutation became prevalent in Europe and North America but not in China, possibly due to variations in human population genetics. The higher ACE2 expression in Asian populations compared to other populations suggests that genetic diversity plays a role in the adaptive evolution of SARS-CoV-2, impacting public health interventions during the pandemic.
