Unconventional materials: the mismatch between electronic charge centers and atomic positions

Jiacheng Gao et al.

Summary: The complete band representations have been constructed in the field of topological quantum chemistry. Unconventional materials with a mismatch between average electronic centers and atomic positions have been effectively diagnosed using elementary band representations. Through high-throughput screening, 423 unconventional compounds with diverse interesting properties and applications have been discovered.

Two-dimensional Stiefel-Whitney insulators in liganded Xenes

Mingxiang Pan et al.

Summary: This study proposes a large class of liganded Xenes, namely hydrogenated and halogenated 2D group-IV honeycomb lattices, as 2D Stiefel-Whitney insulators (SWIs). The nontrivial topology of liganded Xenes is determined by the bulk topological invariant and the existence of protected corner states. Moreover, the liganded Xenes have a large and tunable bandgap, facilitating the experimental characterization of the 2D SWI phase.

Magnetic band representations, Fu-Kane-like symmetry indicators, and magnetic topological materials

Jiacheng Gao et al.

Summary: The study of magnetic topological materials is of great interest for realizing novel topological phases and pursuing potential applications in low-energy consumption spintronics. In this research, starting from the theory of nonmagnetic topological quantum chemistry, the researchers obtained irreducible (co)representations and compatibility relations in momentum space and constructed a complete list of magnetic band (co)representations in real space. They also developed symmetry indicators (SIs) to diagnose topological magnetic materials and identified numerous magnetic topological candidates through spin-polarized calculations.

Magnetic topological quantum chemistry

Luis Elcoro et al.

Summary: The authors extended Topological Quantum Chemistry to magnetic space groups, forming a complete theory of band topology in magnetic and nonmagnetic crystalline solids. They derived small corepresentations, momentum stars, compatibility relations, and magnetic elementary band corepresentations for 1,421 magnetic space groups, and identified symmetry-based indicators of electronic band topology.

Irvsp: To obtain irreducible representations of electronic states in the VASP

Jiacheng Gao et al.

Summary: The open-source program irvsp computes irreducible representations for electronic states in all 230 space groups, using wavefunctions and space group operators generated by the Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package. It can handle spin-orbit coupling and is useful for analyzing energy bands, their connectivities, and band topology. The program has been extended to orthogonal tight-binding Hamiltonians and a sister program is also available.

Second-order topological insulator state in hexagonal lattices and its abundant material candidates

Shifeng Qian et al.

Summary: We propose two mechanisms for realizing the second-order topological insulator (SOTI) state in spinless hexagonal lattices and predict three categories of real light element material candidates with nontrivial band topology characteristics. These candidates exhibit protected corner states with fractional charge and a giant bulk band gap, providing opportunities for experimental verification.

Observation of topological edge states in the quantum spin Hall insulator Ta2Pd3Te5

Xuguang Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental evidence of a 2DTI in the van der Waals material Ta2Pd3Te5 has been reported, showing that each monolayer is a 2DTI with weak interlayer interactions. Measurements confirm the existence of a band gap at the Fermi level and topological edge states inside the gap, making Ta2Pd3Te5 a promising material for fabricating spintronic devices based on the QSH effect.

Application of topological quantum chemistry in electrides

Simin Nie et al.

Summary: The theory of topological quantum chemistry (TQC) establishes a close connection between band representations in momentum space and orbital characters in real space, providing an effective way to diagnose and identify topological materials. With computed irreducible representations, it is possible to accurately identify electrides with excess electrons in vacancies.

Quantum spin Hall effect in Ta2M3Te5 (M = Pd, Ni)

Zhaopeng Guo et al.

Summary: The research predicts that monolayer Ta2Pd3Te5 can act as a QSH insulator based on first-principles calculations, with nontrivial topology. It is also found that the QSH state in Ta2M3Te5 (M = Pd, Ni) can be tuned by external strain, as confirmed through experimental and computational analysis.

Sixfold excitations in electrides

Simin Nie et al.

Summary: This study identifies a single linear dispersive sixfold excitation in the electride Li12Mg3Si4 and its derivatives. The unique topological properties of this excitation, including trivial surface Fermi arcs but topological hinge arcs and protection by specific combined symmetries, make these electrides promising platforms for the systematic studies of different topological phases.
