Giant elastic response and ultra-stable elastocaloric effect in tweed textured Fe-Pd single crystals

Fei Xiao et al.

Summary: This study reports that a large elastic-like strain of over 4% can be achieved in a tweed textured Fe-Pd single crystal under a compressive stress of 300 MPa. This giant elastic response gives rise to a significant and homogenous elastocaloric effect, which can sustain stable performance during a large number of mechanical cycles.

Lucia Ianniciello et al.

Summary: Elastocaloric cooling is a potentially more efficient and environmentally friendly refrigeration technique compared to conventional methods. However, the main challenge lies in the lifetime of the devices, which can be improved by activating them through compression and optimizing the flow system. This study shows promising results in achieving a maximum temperature span and cooling power with a high cycle endurance under compressive cycling.

Solid-state cooling by elastocaloric polymer with uniform chain-lengths

Shixian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that polymer elastomers with uniform molecular chain-lengths exhibit enormous elastocaloric effects through reversible conformational changes. A rotary-motion cooling device is tailored to high-strains characteristics of rubbers, which effectively discharges the cooling energy of polymer elastomers. This work provides a strategy for enhancing elastocaloric effects and promoting the commercialization of solid-state cooling devices based on polymer elastomers.

Refrigeration performance and the elastocaloric effect in natural and synthetic rubbers

R. Bennacer et al.

Summary: Elastocaloric cooling using five different types of rubbers was studied in this research, with natural rubber identified as the best performing working material worth further exploration. The mechanical response of the rubbers depended on the maximum loading, showing a negated Mullins effect after nine cycles. The Coefficient Of Performance (COP) was quantified for the materials, with natural rubber displaying the highest COP of over 2.

Performance assessment of a rotary active magnetic regenerator prototype using gadolinium

M. Masche et al.

Summary: An experimental rotary magnetocaloric prototype utilizing active magnetic regeneration was presented as an alternative to traditional cooling systems. The prototype achieved efficient cooling using gadolinium spheres and water mixed with ethylene glycol as the refrigerant and heat transfer fluid, respectively. Operating near room temperature, the system demonstrated cooling powers exceeding 800 W at 1.4 Hz, comparable to existing magnetocaloric devices.

Achieving enhanced mechanical, pseudoelastic and elastocaloric properties in Ni-Mn-Ga alloys via Dy micro-alloying and isothermal mechanical cyclic training

W. Tong et al.

Summary: In this study, the combination of Dy micro-alloying and IMCT was used to enhance the mechanical, pseudoelastic, and elastocaloric properties of Ni-Mn-Ga shape memory alloys. The formation of granular DyNi4Ga precipitates improved both strength and ductility, while IMCT treatment produced internal stress and increased transformation strains and adiabatic temperature changes significantly. The trained alloys achieved a giant adiabatic temperature change of -12.5 degrees C, the highest value reported in Ni-Mn-Ga based shape memory alloys.
