To decarbonize industry, we must decarbonize heat

Gregory P. Thiel et al.

Summary: The industry is a challenging sector to decarbonize due to its diverse processes, but developing zero-carbon process heating technologies can eliminate a significant portion of emissions, accounting for about one-fifth of global CO2 emissions. This article reviews industrial heat demand and costs, as well as the key challenges and R&D needs in developing zero-carbon industrial heating technologies, highlighting four pathways for technological advancements. Moreover, it identifies crosscutting challenges in the development and adoption of zero-carbon industrial heat technologies, emphasizing the need for significant breakthroughs in industrial decarbonization.

On the climate impacts of blue hydrogen production

Christian Bauer et al.

Summary: Blue hydrogen, produced from natural gas with carbon capture and storage, has the potential to be a low-carbon energy carrier if significant CO2 emissions are captured and permanently stored. However, recent research raises questions about its actual climate impact from a life cycle perspective. Advanced reforming with high CO2 capture rates combined with low methane emissions in the natural gas supply chain can lead to substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

Environmental and economic implications of US postconsumer plastic waste management

R. Basuhi et al.

Summary: This study examines the environmental and economic impacts of plastic waste management in the U.S., finding that current collection volumes are insufficient to offset greenhouse gas emissions and are uneconomical. Improving waste-to-energy efficiencies, developing high-yield plastics-to-fuel pathways, and incorporating design for recycling considerations are key to addressing the issue. External market factors also play a critical role in the financial viability of treatment processes.
