The latitudinal temperature gradient and its climate dependence as inferred from foraminiferal δ18O over the past 95 million years

Daniel E. Gaskell et al.

Summary: The latitudinal temperature gradient is a fundamental state parameter of the climate system. Using planktonic foraminifera δO-18 data, this study successfully reconstructed the latitudinal sea-surface temperature gradient over the last 95 million years. The results show a wide range of temperature gradients, with the highest gradients during the coldest periods. The findings are closer to model predictions and provide insights into the climate system's internal predictability.

Middle Miocene Climate and Stable Oxygen Isotopes in Europe Based on Numerical Modeling

Svetlana Botsyun et al.

Summary: The Middle Miocene in Europe experienced significant changes in climate, environment, and vegetation. However, detailed reconstructions of temperature and precipitation patterns during this period are lacking. In this study, a high-resolution isotope-enabled general circulation model was used to investigate these changes. The modeling results are consistent with available temperature data, but show lower precipitation rates compared to pre-industrial times for central Europe. The changes in precipitation are attributed to shifts in pressure patterns and associated changes in wind direction and humidity. Additionally, the study found that changes in precipitation isotopes were larger in high elevation regions, while topography played a smaller role.

Middle Miocene palynoflora from the Adamow lignite deposit, central Poland

Elzbieta Worobiec et al.

Summary: The first mid-Polish lignite seam group formed during a warm temperate and humid climate with wetland and mesophytic vegetation. The palynoflora composition indicates a homogenous climate within the entire Polish Lowlands during formation of the group, with slight differences reflecting the succession of plant communities in different hydrological and trophic conditions.

How Can Climate Models Be Used in Paleoelevation Reconstructions?

Svetlana Botsyun et al.

Summary: The process of reconstructing paleoelevation from proxy data such as stable oxygen isotope records in terrestrial archives is complex and requires consideration of various paleoclimate processes. Recent advances in isotope tracking climate models have improved the estimation of paleoclimate changes and enhanced elevation reconstructions. The use of high-resolution isotopes-enabled General Circulation Models (iGCMs) together with time-specific boundary conditions and variable topography provides a powerful tool for interpreting isotopic records and improving accuracy in paleoelevation reconstructions.

Christine A. Shields et al.

Summary: Analysis of atmospheric rivers (ARs) and precipitation patterns during the Eocene period using high resolution climate simulations shows that the characteristics of ARs are influenced by different external forcing scenarios, with changes in the low-level jet being the primary factor for landfall location. Precipitation attributable to ARs is characterized by intensity and amount, varying across regions and latitudinal locations.

Simulating Miocene Warmth: Insights From an Opportunistic Multi-Model Ensemble (MioMIP1)

N. J. Burls et al.

Summary: The Miocene epoch was a period of dynamic and warm climate, with reconstructed surface temperatures indicating warmth in midlatitude and polar regions. CO2 concentration was the primary factor controlling global warming, with other factors like paleogeography and ice sheets contributing to raising global temperatures. While progress has been made in simulating Miocene warmth, challenges still remain, emphasizing the need for community-led efforts in coordinating modeling and data activities.

How Climate, Uplift and Erosion Shaped the Alpine Topography

Pierre G. Valla et al.

Summary: Decades of scientific research on the European Alps have helped quantify the processes shaping the Earth's surface, focusing on rock exhumation, surface erosion, and topographic changes, as well as explaining modern geodetic rock uplift rates. Recent methodological and conceptual developments have contributed to our understanding of the European Alps, while also suggesting ways to fill the gaps in our knowledge.
