Toxin production of dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum isolated from the East China Sea

Summary: This study determined the toxins produced by strain MEL11 of the dinoflagellate Gymnodinium catenatum isolated from the East China Sea using HPLC-MS/MS. A total of 11 paralytic shellfish toxins (PSTs) dominated by hydroxybenzoate analogs and N-sulfocarbamoyl toxins were detected. Temperature variations had no apparent effect on the cellular toxin composition and content of the strain, while nutrient limitation and nitrogen source significantly impacted toxin production. The study highlights the potential diversity of toxin profiles of G. catenatum in the East China Sea, as well as the effects of nutrients on production of GC toxins.

First record of a Takayama bloom in Haizhou Bay in response to dissolved organic nitrogen and phosphorus

Summary: This study documented the first occurrence of a Takayama bloom in the temperate coastal waters of China. The researchers found that the high eutrophication levels in Haizhou Bay, caused by intensive mariculture and terrestrial nutrient input, accelerated the proliferation of T. acrotrocha. The results suggest that Karenia blooms are becoming increasingly dominant in eutrophic temperate coasts with intensive mariculture activities, particularly under ocean warming.
