Assessment of seasonal variability of input of microplastics from the Northern Dvina River to the Arctic Ocean

Igor Zhdanov et al.

Summary: The Northern Dvina River is a major source of microplastic pollution in the White and Barents Seas, with no significant seasonal variation in microplastic export. The highest export rate occurs during the spring flood period.

Weathering indices of microplastics along marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) and its adjoining urban beach

Javier Bayo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microplastic burden in marine and coastal sediments from the harbor of Cartagena (Spain) and its adjoining beach. Fibers were found to be the predominant type of microplastics in both marine and coastal sediments. The highest concentrations were found in the deepest marine sediments and in the furthest zone from the seashore for coastal sediments.

Influence of interaction on accuracy of quantification of mixed microplastics using Py-GC/MS

Fangfang Lou et al.

Summary: Accurate identification and quantification of microplastics (MPs) is challenging yet crucial. This study used pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS) to detect five common types of MPs and investigated the thermochemical interactions during co-pyrolysis of different plastics. The results showed that previous indicators for quantitative analysis may lead to high uncertainty, but new indicators were proposed in this study to improve accuracy. The maximum quantification uncertainties of PE, PP, and PS were successfully reduced.

Marine microplastics as vectors of major ocean pollutants and its hazards to the marine ecosystem and humans

Tan Suet May Amelia et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution has environmental and ecological impacts on plants, animals, and humans globally. It acts as a vector for pollutants, particularly in marine ecosystems, leading to bioaccumulation. Further research is needed to understand the potential effects on human health and factors influencing pollutant sorption and bioaccumulation by microplastic.

Microplastics on beaches and mangrove sediments along the coast of South China

Peng-Cheng Dou et al.

Summary: Accumulation of microplastics data on a global scale is crucial for supporting plastic waste management and protecting ecosystems. Sampling campaigns conducted in South China revealed comparable concentrations of MPs to other regions worldwide, with polystyrene foams and fibers being the most abundant debris. Principal component and correlation analyses showed that MPs abundances were linked to factors like wind direction, wastewater discharge, and human activities, posing potential ecological risks that should not be ignored along the coast of South China.

Microplastic pollution in Larimichthys polyactis in the coastal area of Jiangsu, China

Feng Yuan et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics pollution in Larimichthys polyactis along the coast of Jiangsu Province, China, is at a medium to low level. The most commonly ingested microplastics by L. polyactis were <1 mm, fibrous, blue, and composed of cellulose.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the snow cover of the northern city agglomeration

A. Yu Kozhevnikov et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Arkhangelsk, one of the world's largest cities located above 64 degrees north latitude, revealed the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) pollution in snow, predominantly originating from pyrogenic sources with contributions from transport and solid fuel combustion. The high correlation between benzo(a)pyrene concentrations and other PAHs with higher molecular weights was observed, indicating a complex pollution scenario in the snow samples collected at different sites in the city.

Understanding the fate and control of road dust-associated microplastics in stormwater

Sirajum Monira et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sources, removal methods, and technical challenges of microplastic pollution in the water environment. It is found that constructed wetlands have limited effectiveness in removing MPs, leading to untreated stormwater releasing significant amounts of MPs into open water bodies. Future opportunities include the installation of membrane- or flotation-based technologies in the outlet of constructed wetlands for enhanced removal efficiency of MPs.

Microplastics around an Arctic seabird colony: Particle community composition varies across environmental matrices

Bonnie M. Hamilton et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is a global concern, and Arctic seabirds may play a role in spreading microplastics, although a gradient of microplastic concentrations around seabird colonies was not found in this study. Further research is needed to understand the sources of microplastics in Arctic ecosystems and the role of seabirds in their distribution.

Microplastics distribution in the Eurasian Arctic is affected by Atlantic waters and Siberian rivers

Evgeniy Yakushev et al.

Summary: Plastic pollution is recognized as a global threat to marine ecosystems, habitats, and wildlife, with remote locations such as the Arctic Ocean being impacted. This study analyzes microplastic distribution in the Eurasian Arctic through water samples, identifying two major sources of pollution: Atlantic surface water and discharge plumes of the Great Siberian Rivers.
