The higher, the closer, the better? Influence of sampling frequency and distance on the acoustic properties of short-beaked common dolphins burst pulses in the Mediterranean Sea

Elena Papale et al.

Summary: This study explored the effects of sampling frequency and distance from source on burst pulsed signals emitted by short-beaked common dolphins in the Mediterranean Sea, finding that higher sampling rates are more accurate but some parameters are not significantly different at lower rates. The transmission loss model indicated that high frequency components attenuate within 800 m from the source. Ultimately, the study enhances the accuracy of passive acoustic monitoring systems for conserving short-beaked common dolphins.

Analysis of the agonistic behaviour and behaviour pattern of Portunus trituberculatus

Bo Wu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the agonistic behavior of Portunus trituberculatus follows a certain regularity, with different sex pairings and culture densities having a significant impact on fighting intensity. Furthermore, fighting experience also plays a significant role in subsequent agonistic behavior, leading to a winner-loser effect.

Artisanal fishing, dolphins, and interactive pinger: A study from a passive acoustic perspective

Giuseppa Buscaino et al.

Summary: The study found that interactions between dolphins and set nets increased over time, leading to a decrease in catch rate. Interactive pingers were effective in deterring dolphin depredation in the short term, but other mitigation approaches should also be considered to manage interactions between fisheries and dolphins effectively.

First evidence of underwater sounds emitted by the living fossils Lepidurus lubbocki and Triops cancriformis (Branchiopoda: Notostraca)

G. Buscaino et al.

Summary: Sound is the most effective means of communication in marine and freshwater ecosystems, but data on acoustic emissions from non-malacostracan crustaceans is lacking. This study for the first time investigated sound emissions from two tadpole shrimp species, revealing high-frequency pulses with distinct characteristics. Lepidurus lubbocki showed higher sound pressure level, emission rate, and a circadian pattern of increased sound abundance during the night compared to Triops cancriformis.

Effect of biological and anthropogenic sound on the orientation behavior of four species of brachyuran crabs

Maria P. Sal Moyano et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the orientation response of different stages of 4 brachyuran crabs to different acoustic signals, showing that invertebrates can discriminate among conspecific signals and highlighting the role of sound in prey-predator relationships. The results also suggest a potentially negative effect of anthropogenic sound on biological interactions in coastal marine lagoons.

Bioacoustic signal denoising: a review

Jie Xie et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the reasons for the decline in animal biodiversity and the use of acoustic sensors to monitor animals, with a focus on the issue of bioacoustic denoising. While denoising methods have been developed, challenges remain, and future research directions include addressing noise issues and improving the performance of bioacoustic signal recognition models.
