Intrusion of Fukushima-derived radiocesium into the East China sea and the Northeast South China Sea in 2011-2015

Fenfen Wang et al.

Summary: A study investigated the long-term impact of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident on the South China Sea and the East China Sea. It was found that radioactive cesium isotopes from the accident intruded into these areas in 2013 and reached a peak in 2014. This intrusion was caused by the formation, subduction, and transport of subtropical and central mode water, which carried the radioactive cesium from the high-latitude open ocean to the low-latitude western boundary area, and then entered the South China Sea and the East China Sea through the Kuroshio Current.

Distribution of dissolved 137Cs, 131I and 238Pu at Eastern Mediterranean Sea in case of hypothetical accident at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant

C. Tsabaris et al.

Summary: A hydrodynamic/lagrangian particle drift model was used to simulate the dispersion of key radionuclides in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea in the event of a nuclear power plant accident. The study found that the released radionuclide would disperse in a westward direction, following the prevailing currents. The spatial and temporal distribution of key radionuclides was examined at neighboring coasts, and the fate of the plume was predicted for different areas. Additionally, the study evaluated the dose rates to marine biota using the ERICA Assessment Tool.

APERTRACK: A particle-tracking model to simulate radionuclide transport in the Arabian/Persian Gulf

R. Perianez

Summary: The study describes a Lagrangian rapid-response model for simulating the transport of radionuclides in the Arabian Gulf, using hypothetical releases from a coastal nuclear power plant to show how the moment of release affects the fate of radionuclides, and how the geochemical behavior of the radionuclide affects further distribution.
