Use of multivariate analysis to evaluate antigenic relationships between US BVDV vaccine strains and non-US genetically divergent isolates

Ana Cristina S. Mosena et al.

Summary: Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) is divided into two species, BVDV-1 and BVDV-2, each with multiple subgenotypes due to genetic diversity. A study utilized multivariate analysis to analyze antigenic relationships between vaccine strains and field isolates, revealing clustering patterns indicating antigenic relatedness among various isolates. The findings suggest that multivariate analysis could help characterize antigenic relationships among BVDV isolates of the same species and improve vaccine composition for successful BVDV control programs.

Lack of Fetal Protection against Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus in a Vaccinated Heifer

Malgorzata D. Klimowicz-Bodys et al.

Summary: The aim of this report was to investigate the spread of BVDV in the cattle population and identify the causes of vaccination failure leading to the birth of PI calves. A case study was conducted at a BVDV-free animal breeding center and cattle farm, revealing that pregnant heifers and cows may still be susceptible to infection with other BVDV subgenotypes despite multiple vaccinations.

Detection of Pestivirus A (bovine viral diarrhea virus 1) in free-living wild boars in Brazil

Gisele S. Porto et al.

Summary: Although BVDV neutralizing antibodies were not identified in the serum samples, 3 out of 49 lung samples from free-living wild boars tested positive for BVDV RNA, with one classified as BVDV-1a and two as 1d subgenotype. This report highlights the presence of BVDV RNA in free-living wild boars, which should be taken into consideration in BVDV control programs, especially in extensive beef cattle rearing systems.

Novel Potent IFN-γ-Inducing CD8+ T Cell Epitopes Conserved among Diverse Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus Strains

Neha Sangewar et al.

Summary: This study identified highly cross-reactive BVDV-specific CD8(+) T cells in cattle and novel IFN-gamma-inducing CD8(+) T cell epitopes from different regions of BVDV polyprotein. These conserved epitopes were found to elicit broadly reactive CD8(+) T cell responses against diverse BVDV strains, suggesting their potential use in developing a more effective CD8(+) T cell-based BVDV vaccine.

Genomic diversity and phylodynamic of bovine viral diarrhea virus in Argentina

Maximiliano J. Spetter et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the evolutionary history of Bovine Viral Diarrhea Virus (BVDV) in Argentina, revealing an exponential increase in viral diversity since the late 1990s, possibly due to livestock expansion. Additionally, novel subtypes 1e and 1i were identified alongside the more common BVDV-1a and BVDV-1b subtypes.

Do modified live virus vaccines against bovine viral diarrhea induce fetal cross-protection against HoBi-like Pestivirus?

Stefano Nardelli et al.

Summary: The study found that the BVDV vaccine may provide partial fetal protection against HobiPeV, even in the absence of a strong specific antibody response. Vaccinated heifers had low or undetectable neutralizing antibody titers to HoBiPeV at the time of challenge.

Global Distribution and Genetic Heterogeneity of Border Disease Virus

Cecilia Righi et al.

Summary: Border disease virus (BDV), belonging to the Pestivirus genus, can cause significant economic losses through interspecies transmission between sheep, cattle, and pigs. Understanding BDV epidemiology in different geographical regions is crucial for prevention and control measures to optimize its spread. Previous studies have shown predominant BDV genotypes in various countries worldwide.

Epidemiology of Bovine Pestiviruses Circulating in Italy

Camilla Luzzago et al.

Summary: Pestiviruses, including BVDV-1, BVDV-2, and HoBiPeV, are widely spread in cattle populations with high genetic variability, especially in Italy. This diversity may impact diagnostic tools and cross-protection from vaccines. Coordinated control measures are recommended in Italy.

Vaccination Failure in Eradication and Control Programs for Bovine Viral Diarrhea Infection

Aleksandra Antos et al.

Summary: Vaccination against BVD is crucial for protecting cattle herds from the economically important disorder caused by BVDV infection. The study compared the serological response in cattle herds with new PI calves, both before and after introducing whole herd vaccination against BVDV. Despite high antibody titers for both vaccine and field strains, a significant portion of samples did not show predominant neutralization against a specific subtype of BVDV.
