Diagnosis, prevalence, and mortality of sarcopenia in dialysis patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Xiaoyu Shu et al.

Summary: There is no consensus on the prevalence and impact of sarcopenia in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing dialysis. This review aimed to summarize the diagnostic criteria, prevalence, and impact of sarcopenia on mortality in these patients. The results showed that sarcopenia is highly prevalent in dialysis patients and is associated with increased mortality risk. Standardization of diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia is necessary, and further longitudinal studies are needed to investigate its prevalence and prognostic value in dialysis patients.

Malnutrition and Sarcopenia Combined Increases the Risk for Mortality in Older Adults on Hemodialysis

Catarina Macedo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of sarcopenia and malnutrition combined on nutritional markers, quality of life, and survival in older adults undergoing chronic hemodialysis. The results showed that the group with sarcopenia and malnutrition had worse nutritional parameters, lower quality of life, and higher mortality risk compared to other groups. Complete nutritional assessment is essential for patients on dialysis to improve outcomes.

Inflammatory cytokines and appetite in older hospitalized patients

Maryam Pourhassan et al.

Summary: This study found that certain cytokines, particularly IL-18, were associated with poor appetite in acutely ill older hospitalized patients, indicating that they may be considered as potential targets for the prevention and treatment of malnutrition.

Importance of Considering Malnutrition and Sarcopenia in Order to Improve the QOL of Elderly Hemodialysis Patients in Japan in the Era of 100-Year Life

Masaaki Inaba et al.

Summary: Malnutrition and sarcopenia are important indicators of ill health in the aging society of Japan, especially among elderly hemodialysis patients. Comorbidities like diabetes and osteoporosis can worsen malnutrition and sarcopenia in these patients.

Length of Stay, Hospital Costs and Mortality Associated With Comorbidity According to the Charlson Comorbidity Index in Immobile Patients After Ischemic Stroke in China: A National Study

Hongpeng Liu et al.

Summary: This study examined comorbidities predictive of length of stay, hospital costs, and mortality in immobile ischemic stroke patients. The Charlson Comorbidity Index was found to be significantly predictive for clinical outcomes. Population aging highlights the importance of identifying, monitoring, and managing chronic comorbidities in immobile stroke populations.
