Glacial episodes of a freshwater Arctic Ocean covered by a thick ice shelf

Walter Geibert et al.

Summary: The study provides evidence for at least two periods in the past when the Arctic Ocean and Nordic seas were covered by an extensive ice shelf and filled with fresh water, causing a widespread absence of thorium-230 in marine sediments. This suggests a revision of sea-level reconstructions may be needed and indicates that large masses of fresh water could be delivered to the North Atlantic Ocean on very short timescales.

Fresh- and Brackish-Water Cold-Tolerant Species of Southern Europe: Migrants from the Paratethys That Colonized the Arctic

Valentina S. Artamonova et al.

Summary: Analysis of zoogeographic, paleogeographic, and molecular data suggests that many cold-tolerant hydrobionts in the Mediterranean region and the Danube River basin likely originated in East Asia or Central Asia and spread to Europe through the Paratethys. Intense speciation and new genus formation took place in this region. Some species migrated from the Caspian region to the Mediterranean during the Miocene, and later spread to the Atlantic Ocean and European Arctic regions. The former Paratethys region remains significant as a center of origin for new species and genera and continues to act as a migration corridor.

Life history variation in Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) and the effects of diet and migration on the growth, condition, and body morphology of two Arctic charr populations in Cumberland Sound, Nunavut, Canada

A. L. Young et al.

Summary: Arctic charr exhibit phenotypic plasticity with different dietary-morphological relationships observed throughout their circumpolar range. Anadromous Arctic charr show faster growth rates and better condition, with a tendency for rapid dietary shifts; while landlocked individuals gradually transition to piscivory.

Vendace (Coregonus albula) and least cisco (Coregonus sardinella) are a single species: evidence from revised data on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA polymorphism

Elena A. Borovikova et al.

Summary: This study revealed the phylogenetic relationships of three coregonid species: vendace, least cisco, and peled, based on nucleotide sequences analysis. The results showed that C. albula and C. sardinella are actually a single species, while peled is closely related to vendace. The reproductive isolation of peled was determined by chromosome rearrangements rather than nucleotide substitutions.
