A century of research on calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H): Leaping from structural characterization to nanoengineering

Felipe Basquiroto de Souza et al.

Summary: This article provides an overview of a century of research on calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), covering from the initial descriptions of its nanostructure to the onset of nanocharacterization and molecular simulations. Overall, further advances in characterization techniques and simulation methods are crucial for unraveling the nanoscale features of C-S-H and driving nanoengineering of cement materials at larger scales.

Determining the disordered nanostructure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) from broad X-ray diffractograms

Felipe Basquiroto de Souza et al.

Summary: This study utilized Debye function analysis to investigate the atomic and nanoscale structural-disorder features of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H), revealing that random layer rotations are a critical feature in C-S-H phases. The findings not only contribute to the construction of more accurate nanoscale models of hydrated cement, but also have potential wider application to similar complex layered structures.

In situ TEM observation of calcium silicate hydrate nanostructure at high temperatures

Qi Zheng et al.

Summary: In situ TEM study shows that C-S-H shrinks at high temperatures, with a decrease in Ca/Si ratio leading to the formation of CaO precipitates. Moreover, above 800 degrees C, C-S-H undergoes phase transformation into metastable calcium silicate minerals.

Effects of pH on the nano/micro structure of calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) under sulfate attack

Xin Liu et al.

Summary: pH plays a crucial role in the deterioration behavior of C-S-H during sulfate attack, with lower pH aggravating decalcification and higher alkalinity enhancing resistance. Under low-pH sulfate attack, C-S-H exhibits a relatively loose structure with increased mean chain length and proportion of large pores.

Mineralogical and microstructural alterations in a portland cement paste after an accelerated decalcification process

I Garcia-Lodeiro et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the microstructural changes in cement pastes exposed to accelerated decalcification, revealing significant effects on portlandite, C-S-H gel, anhydrous clinker, and ettringite. Decalcification induced major micro- and nano-structural changes, particularly in the layers closest to the leaching agent. The distribution of water molecules and the type of bonding in different layers were also found to be significantly affected by the decalcification process.

Calcium silicate hydrate-in-situ development of the silicate structure followed by infrared spectroscopy

Elisabeth John et al.

Summary: This study used in-situ infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to investigate the structural development of synthetic calcium silicate hydrates with different calcium contents. A baseline correction method initially developed for X-ray diffractograms was successfully adapted for in-situ IR, leading to improved signal quality and reproducibility. The separate silicate infrared bands were monitored over 24 hours, showing the development of oligomeric and dimeric species and revealing insights into the correlation between silicate polymerization and unit cell changes in calcium silicate hydrate. Comparisons with Si-29-MAS-NMR highlighted the advantages of in-situ IR spectroscopy.
