Torsional dynamic response of a pipe pile in homogeneous unsaturated soils

Wenjie Ma et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an analytical solution to investigate the dynamic response of a pipe pile subjected to torsional harmonic excitation torque in unsaturated soils. The wave equations of three-phase porous media are considered, taking into account the capillary pressure, inertial coupling effect between water and gas phase, as well as the influence of saturation degree on soil's dynamic shear modulus. The pile is modeled using one-dimensional elastic theory. Dynamic governing equations for the outer and inner unsaturated soils are derived and a closed-form solution in frequency domain is obtained by considering the boundary and continuity conditions at the pile-soil interface. The proposed analytical solution is verified and compared with existing solutions, and a parameter study is conducted to analyze the influence on the dynamic response of the pipe pile.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical solution for determining the time-harmonic response of single open-ended pipe piles subjected to vertically propagating seismic P-waves. Closed-form expressions of seismic pipe pile displacements are derived along with depth- and frequency-dependent parameters of complex Winkler springs for beam-on-dynamic-Winkler-foundation models. The importance of considering the contribution of the inner soil in the seismic analysis of pipe piles is quantified via a parametric sensitivity analysis.

Optimization of design parameters of displacement isolation piles constructed between a high-speed railway bridge and a double-line metro tunnel: From the view point of vibration isolation effect

Yao Shan et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the optimization design of isolation piles for a double-line metro tunnel construction beneath an existing high-speed railway bridge in a city of east China. The optimization target is to meet the displacement criteria of the bridge pile foundation during tunneling process and achieve an outstanding vibration mitigation effect. Steady-state finite element analysis is used to evaluate the limit of the pile spacing, and analytical and 3D models are established for further optimization of the pile parameters. The recommended optimized pile spacing is based on in-situ measurement data and evaluation results.

Summary: The paper presents an approximate solution for calculating the axial dynamic impedance of a group of square piles. It examines the effects of the square cross section on pile-soil interaction and finds that vertical soil vibration around a square pile depends on wave propagation directions in the near field. The study also calculates the dynamic impedance of the square pile group using the superposition principle.

Lateral dynamic response of pile group embedded in unsaturated soil

Min Zhang et al.

Summary: A mathematical formulation is proposed for analyzing the behavior of a pile group in unsaturated soil under horizontal time-harmonic vibrations. By introducing Helmholtz decomposition, the impedance and attenuation functions of soil displacement are derived, and the impedances of the pile group are evaluated using dynamic interaction factors. The study investigates the effects of different factors on pile internal forces and validates the proposed method with a benchmark solution. Additionally, a comprehensive parametric study shows the significant impact of saturation and permeability on saturated conditions, while unsaturated conditions are less affected.

Dynamic interaction of soil and end-bearing piles in sloping ground: Numerical simulation and analytical solution

Liming Qu et al.

Summary: The effects of sloping ground on the vertical pile-to-pile interaction for end-bearing piles embedded in a homogenous soil were investigated, with a focus on amplitude and phase lag in the soil-pile system to reveal the essential characteristics of dynamic pile-pile interaction. The results showed that the dynamic displacement of a free field is position dependent, and the longer embedded segment absorbs more energy from the surrounding soil. An analytical model was established based on the numerical findings to calculate the dynamic responses of pile groups in sloping ground.

A continuum-based model on axial pile-head dynamic impedance in inhomogeneous soil

Liming Qu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a closed-form solution for the steady dynamic response of circular piles embedded in inhomogeneous soil. The study models the soil as a viscoelastic continuum and the pile as a one-dimensional elastic shaft. The results show that the modulus and thickness of inhomogeneous soil profile have a significant impact on dynamic stiffness, with the variation pattern of dynamic impedance dominated by the cut-off frequency.
