Summary: There is evidence suggesting that surgeons have historically over-prescribed opioid pain medications after thyroid and parathyroid surgery, potentially contributing to the US opioid epidemic. This review explores the evidence supporting multimodal methods of pain control after cervical endocrine surgery. The findings indicate limited data on pain scores following discharge and higher intervention doses compared to clinical practice. However, incorporating evidence-based, non-opioid interventions into pain management protocols may improve postoperative pain control after cervical endocrine surgery.

Routine comprehensive functional voice analysis before and after surgery is important to understand factors contributing to vocal alterations.

A specific enhanced recovery protocol decreases opioid use after thyroid and parathyroid surgery

Summary: This study showed that the enhanced recovery protocol specific for thyroid/parathyroid surgery significantly reduced perioperative opioid use and decreased the occurrence of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Patients who used the enhanced recovery protocol had a much higher rate of being entirely opioid-free after surgery.

Following this, the proportion of total thyroidectomies decreased from 80% in September 2015 to 39% by December 2018 compared to thyroid lobectomies. For thyroid cancer patients, the percentage of thyroid lobectomies over total thyroidectomies has been increasing, from 17% in 2015 to 28% by the end of 2018.
