Photoluminescent Molecules and Materials as Diagnostic Reporters in Lateral Flow Assays

Adheesha N. Danthanarayana et al.

Summary: The lateral flow assay (LFA) is a common point-of-care diagnostic test known for its simplicity, speed, low cost, and portability. Recent advancements in photoluminescent-based reporter technologies have enhanced the performance of LFAs, with organic fluorophores, quantum dots, and other photoluminescent reporters showing improved sensitivity compared to conventional gold nanoparticles. Photoluminescent-based LFAs have the potential to reach lower detection limits, enable quantitative and multiplex analyte detection, and are well-suited for medical diagnostics, food and agricultural industry, and environmental testing.

Ultrasensitive and Highly Specific Lateral Flow Assays for Point-of-Care Diagnosis

Yilin Liu et al.

Summary: LFAs, paper-based point-of-care diagnostic tools, have traditionally lower sensitivities and specificities than standard laboratory tests. Recent efforts have focused on optimizing assay kinetics, signal amplification, and sample preamplification to increase sensitivities, as well as improving specificity through high-affinity molecules and assay optimization. With continuing improvements, LFAs may soon offer performance competitive with laboratory techniques while retaining a rapid format.
