Mixed bacterial-fungal infection following total hip arthroplasty: A case report

Yang-Jing Lin et al.

Summary: Prosthetic infection is a severe complication after arthroplasty, and mixed bacterial-fungal infection is rare but can have disastrous consequences. This case study presents a 76-year-old female patient who experienced prosthetic infection after total hip replacement. Multiple debridements were performed, and the culture results initially showed no bacteria but later identified Staphylococcus hominis in a previous hospitalization. Fungal infection was not considered, resulting in ineffective anti-infection therapy. Ultimately, Candida albicans was identified in the periprosthetic tissue culture, and the fungal prosthetic infection was successfully treated with a two-stage revision and antifungal drugs. Accurate diagnosis and standardized treatment are crucial for managing mixed bacterial-fungal prosthetic infections after hip arthroplasty.

Antifungal-Loaded Acrylic Bone Cement in the Treatment of Periprosthetic Hip and Knee Joint Infections: A Review

Konstantinos Anagnostakos et al.

Summary: Little is known about the clinical use of antifungal-loaded acrylic bone cement in the treatment of periprosthetic hip and knee joint infections. A literature search identified 10 published reports describing 11 patients and 12 joints where antifungal-loaded cement was used. These studies were mainly case reports or case series, and no randomized controlled trials were found. The majority of the studies focused on Candida infections. Further research is urgently needed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of antifungal-loaded bone cement in periprosthetic joint infections.

A spacer infection by Candida albicans secondary to a Staphylococcus capitis prosthetic joint infection: a case report

Marta Bottagisio et al.

Summary: Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a feared complication after total arthroplasty surgeries, with Gram-positive bacteria being the most common pathogen. Fungal infections are rare. This case report highlights a rare occurrence of Candida albicans infection in a spacer after revision surgery, which was successfully treated with fluconazole. Early detection and appropriate treatment are crucial for successful outcomes in these complicated cases.

Summary: Non-Candida fungal prosthetic joint infections pose a clinical challenge that requires a multidisciplinary approach. The combination of two-stage revision arthroplasty and prolonged antifungal treatment has been shown to be the standard of care in the reviewed cases.

Three-stage revision arthroplasty for the treatment of fungal periprosthetic joint infection: outcome analysis of a novel treatment algorithm A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

H. Baecker et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel treatment algorithm based on three-stage revision arthroplasty with local and systemic antifungal therapy was implemented for fungal periprosthetic joint infections (fPJI). The results showed a successful eradication rate of 88.8% in 18 patients with a mean follow-up of 35 months, indicating promising outcomes in the treatment of fPJI.
