The synthesis of quaternary N-alkyl tropinium cationic surfactants and study on their properties: effect of temperature, hydrophobic chain length and anions

Zhixia Wang et al.

Summary: A series of quaternary N-alkyl tropinium cationic surfactants (TILS) were synthesized and characterized. The effect of temperature, hydrophobic chain length, and anions on their properties were studied. The structure of anions significantly influenced the krafft point and the wide temperature window of TILS. The increase in hydrophobicity of anions led to a decrease in the critical micelle concentration (CMC) value and improved surface activity of TILS. The thermodynamic properties of micellization Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy of micelles were determined. The micellization process of TILS was found to be spontaneous and more stable with increased anionic hydrophobicity. The CMC values of TILS were measured using UV spectrophotometry and found to be consistent with those obtained by the electrical conductivity method.
