Plant phosphorus-use and -acquisition strategies in Amazonia

Tatiana Reichert et al.

Summary: In the tropical rainforest of Amazonia, the effects of phosphorus on the future of forest biomass carbon storage under elevated atmospheric CO2 concentrations are still uncertain. Current knowledge on plant phosphorus-use and -acquisition strategies is limited, hindering the accuracy of vegetation models. This study synthesizes existing knowledge and proposes a conceptual framework to understand the variations in plant phosphorus strategies in response to soil phosphorus concentrations and elevated atmospheric CO2.

A'uwe (Xavante) views of food security in a context of monetarization of an indigenous economy in Central Brazil

James R. Welch et al.

Summary: This study explores food security in Xavante communities in Brazil, finding that the A'uwe people rely on a complex network of food reciprocity to mitigate hunger and food scarcity, and demonstrating the resilience of their hybrid economy to changes in external government resources.

Direct evidence for phosphorus limitation on Amazon forest productivity

Hellen Fernanda Viana Cunha et al.

Summary: The extent to which phosphorus availability limits tropical forest productivity is highly uncertain. However, adding phosphorus in low phosphorus content Amazon rainforest can significantly increase net primary productivity.

Effects of phosphorus fertilizer application on phosphorus fractions in different organs of Cordia trichotoma

Matheus S. S. Kulmann et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the addition of phosphorus to sandy soil can influence the distribution of phosphorus fractions in various organs of Cordia trichotoma, with annual organs preferring to accumulate in the soluble inorganic fraction and perennial organs preferring to accumulate in the soluble organic fraction.

A new hypothesis for the origin of Amazonian Dark Earths

Lucas C. R. Silva et al.

Summary: The study of Amazonian Dark Earths reveals that they contain high levels of phosphorus and calcium, two of the least abundant macronutrients in the region. The use of stable isotope ratios suggests that these soils may have existed before human settlement and could have originated from alluvial deposition and burning activities.

Fertilization and seasonality influence on the photochemical performance of tree legumes in forest plantation for area recovery in the Amazon

Roberto Kirmayr Jaquetti et al.

Summary: This study examined variations in chlorophyll fluorescence of six Fabaceae species under high and low water and nutrient conditions, revealing high interspecific differences. Plants under high water and nutrient availability conditions showed enhanced performance index, while under drought and nutrient-poor conditions, most species exhibited increased energy dissipation for photoprotection. Nitrogen-fixing species demonstrated increased performance index correlated with electron transport and foliar zinc and nitrogen concentrations, showcasing their ability to thrive in high-light environments.
