Antimicrobial Activity of Quercetin: An Approach to Its Mechanistic Principle

Thi Lan Anh Nguyen et al.

Summary: Quercetin, a plant flavonoid, has been extensively studied for its antimicrobial activity. It exhibits inhibitory effects on the growth of bacteria, fungi, and viruses through various mechanisms including cell membrane damage, inhibition of nucleic acids and protein synthesis, and reduction of virulence factors. Quercetin also shows potential against drug-resistant microorganisms. This review provides insights into its mechanism of action and potential clinical applications as an antimicrobial agent.

Oxidation Stress as a Mechanism of Aging in Human Erythrocytes: Protective Effect of Quercetin

Alessia Remigante et al.

Summary: This study aimed to verify the protective role of Quercetin in a d-Galactose-induced model of aging in human erythrocytes. It was found that Quercetin preferentially improved lipid peroxidation rather than protein oxidation and prevented glycated hemoglobin formation. These findings suggest that the Band 3 protein could be a potential target for antioxidant treatments against aging-related disturbances.

Interactions with Microbial Proteins Driving the Antibacterial Activity of Flavonoids

Giuliana Donadio et al.

Summary: Flavonoids, abundant natural compounds produced by plants, exhibit various activities against cells and systems, with antimicrobial activity being particularly interesting. Despite structural heterogeneity, many flavonoids affect the same cellular pathways and interact with multiple targets, producing multiple effects. The reported data demonstrate the potential of flavonoids in developing innovative systems to address antibiotic resistance.

Plant Secondary Metabolite Biosynthesis and Transcriptional Regulation in Response to Biotic and Abiotic Stress Conditions

Rahmatullah Jan et al.

Summary: Plant secondary metabolites play crucial roles in plant survival and ecological connections, providing defense against pathogens and stress. The accumulation of these metabolites is highly influenced by environmental factors, and their biosynthesis is regulated by various genes. Transcriptional factors such as WRKY, MYB, AP2/ERF, bZIP, bHLH, and NAC play key roles in regulating secondary metabolite biosynthesis in plants under stress conditions.

Flavonone 3-hydroxylase Relieves Bacterial Leaf Blight Stress in Rice via Overaccumulation of Antioxidant Flavonoids and Induction of Defense Genes and Hormones

Rahmatullah Jan et al.

Summary: Efficient accumulation of flavonoids through overexpression of F3H in rice increased tolerance to bacterial leaf blight (BLB) stress by promoting plant growth, reducing leaf lesion length, and altering antioxidant system. Overaccumulation of kaempferol and quercetin in transgenic lines scavenged reactive oxygen species in response to pathogenic infection. Induction of F3H also enhanced the regulation of downstream genes involved in flavonoid synthesis and showed an antagonistic interaction between SA and JA signaling pathways.

Beneficial Effect of Quercetin on Erythrocyte Properties in Type 2 Diabetic Rats

Tomas Jasenovec et al.

Summary: The study indicates potential benefits of quercetin treatment on erythrocyte properties in diabetes mellitus. Improvements in erythrocyte deformability were observed in older obese ZDF rats after quercetin treatment, while no changes or deterioration were found in both lean and obese younger and older animals. NO production by erythrocytes increased in all experimental groups post treatment, suggesting a positive effect of quercetin on erythrocyte functionality.

The role of quercetin in plants

Priyanka Singh et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are a special category of hydroxylated phenolic compounds with an aromatic ring structure, and quercetin is a subclass known for its bioactive properties in promoting plant physiological processes and antioxidant functions. Quercetin plays a crucial role in enhancing various physiological and biochemical processes in plants under stress and non-stress conditions, while also showing potential in mitigating biotic and abiotic stresses such as salt, heavy metal, and UV stress. Additionally, the biosynthesis of flavonoids, their signaling pathways, and quercetin's involvement in plant signaling are discussed in this review.
