Contribution of pre-storage melatonin application to chilling tolerance of some mango fruit cultivars and relationship with polyamines metabolism and γ-aminobutyric acid shunt pathway

Renu Bhardwaj et al.

Summary: Pre-storage application of 100 mu M melatonin was found to enhance chilling tolerance in 'Tangra' mangoes by increasing endogenous polyamines and GABA accumulation, along with related enzyme activities. However, limited effectiveness of melatonin treatment in alleviating chilling injury in 'Chaunsa' mangoes may be attributed to higher polyamines accumulation and lower enzyme activities.

Melatonin treatment reduces qualitative decay and improves antioxidant system in highbush blueberry fruit during cold storage

Anna Magri et al.

Summary: Melatonin treatment can effectively reduce weight loss and delay postharvest ripening of highbush blueberries. It promotes the production of polyphenols, flavonoids, anthocyanins, and ascorbic acid, enhancing the antioxidant activity of the fruit. The enzymatic antioxidant system is also positively influenced by the treatment, resulting in higher activity of catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase. Melatonin treatment slows down enzymatic browning and preserves the qualitative traits of the fruit during cold storage.

Riboflavin inhibits browning of fresh-cut apples by repressing phenolic metabolism and enhancing antioxidant system

Zhuping Zha et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that LED-based riboflavin treatment is an effective strategy for preserving the quality of fresh-cut apples. It effectively controls browning, microbial growth, weight loss, and softening, while improving whiteness and soluble solid content. The application of riboflavin represses the enzymatic activities of polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase, but enhances the phenolic content, thereby strengthening the antioxidant system and reducing membrane peroxidation.

Isolation and control of Botrytis cinerea in postharvest green pepper fruit

Luyao Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the fungus Botrytis cinerea was isolated from infected green pepper fruit and identified as the cause of severe postharvest losses. The antifungal potential of sodium dehydroacetate (SD) and trans-2-hexenal (TH) was examined, and both treatments showed strong inhibition of B. cinerea growth and limited the progression of gray mold disease in green peppers, while also improving several quality attributes. These results suggest that SD and TH have potential as antifungal agents for the control of gray mold in postharvest green peppers.
