The Role of Agricultural Biomass as a Renewable Energy Source in European Union Countries

Dorota Janiszewska et al.

Summary: The aim of the research was to assess the potential of agricultural biomass in European Union countries for energy purposes. The study estimated both the theoretical and technical potential of agricultural biomass resources and found that only about 15% of the existing potential can be used for energy purposes due to high demand in agriculture. Straw from cereal crops and the cultivation of energy crops on fallow land were identified as having the highest potential. The research also highlighted significant spatial differences in the potential of agricultural biomass among European Union countries.

Neglected Potential of Wild Garlic (Allium ursinum L.)-Specialized Metabolites Content and Antioxidant Capacity of Wild Populations in Relation to Location and Plant Phenophase

Sandra Voca et al.

Summary: Wild garlic leaves are rich in bioactive compounds such as vitamin C, total phenolics, and antioxidants, with significant differences in these compounds observed in leaves from different locations and phenophases. This suggests that wild garlic leaves have high production potential for various functional products and natural food supplements, making them valuable for promoting human health.

Influence of preparation of Sida hermaphrodita silages on its conversion to methane

Marcin Zielinski et al.

Summary: The study found that silage prepared with molasses had the highest methane production, followed by untreated plant material. Methane production was correlated with Methanosarcinaceae abundance, and ensiling had no effect on hemicellulose content and reduced the pH of the silage.

Policy implications of competition between conventional and energy crops

J. Knapek et al.

Summary: The competitiveness of energy crops must consider specific climatic and soil parameters, and analyze based on the utilization of different land plots. Overestimating the potential biomass could lead to improper resource allocation. In fact, there are significant differences in profitability (and competitiveness) of energy biomass within different territories and land zones.

Energy Properties and Biomass Yield of Miscanthus x Giganteus Fertilized by Municipal Sewage Sludge

Neven Voca et al.

Summary: The application of municipal sewage sludge as fertilizer in the production of non-food energy crops is a sustainable approach to sewage sludge management, allowing for recycling of nutrients and organic materials from waste. Research shows that applying municipal sewage sludge to Miscanthus does not negatively affect its growth and biomass production, making it a suitable feedstock for direct combustion and second-generation liquid biofuels.
